JUMP TO RECIPE

Difficulty: Easy

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 20 minutes

Servings: 10 to 12

Ingredients

  • 4 to 5 oranges
  • 2 cups water
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Directions

Use a vegetable peeler to peel the oranges (avoiding the pith), then trim them into thin strips.

In a sauce pot, bring the water, 1 cup of the sugar, and the salt to a simmer, add the orange peels, and let simmer for 20 minutes or until the peels are soft while still remaining vibrant. Do not let the liquid reach more than a simmer or your oranges may turn brown.

After the 20 minutes has passed, remove the pot from the heat and stir in the vanilla, letting the peels rest in the syrup for 10 more minutes.

Remove the peels from the liquid and let dry on a cooling rack until tacky. Toss them in the remaining sugar, letting them finish drying on the rack.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Kitchen Tips: Swap out the orange peels for lemon or lime peels for a twist on this sweet treat!
