Servings: 4 to 6 servings
Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 4 hr 30 min
Difficulty: Easy
3 pounds short ribs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup dry white wine
1 cup strong brewed coffee
1 large yellow onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
2 teaspoons hot or mild chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Season the short ribs with salt and pepper, to taste. Warm the oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the ribs and brown until golden, turning them once, about 8 minutes. Transfer the ribs to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour the wine and coffee into the skillet. Cook over high heat, scraping up the brown bits on the bottom, until the sauce is reduced by one forth, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Put the ribs, onion, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt, the chili powder and oregano in a slow cooker. Pour in the wine sauce and cook, covered, on high for 3 1/2 hours. Uncover and cook until the ribs are falling apart, about 45 minutes more. Transfer the ribs and sauce to a serving dish and serve.

This is the best recipe ever for beef short ribs! Great flavor and fork tender. So glad I saw Michael make this on TV. My husband, Michael had to make himself pull away from the table. Thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed watching you and your husband today making the braised short ribs. I watch your show in the evenings, and I also love when your sons are cooking also. I have tryed some of your recipes at home. my son is my taster. I was wondering do you really have to add coffee, or can you just add the wine? And also I don't own a slow cooker, what else can I use. keep those great recipes coming Paula.

I was expecting this to be spicy but it wasn't. I was surprised by the rich, roasted flavor. It's the best 'roast beef' I've ever had! And the Deluxe Twice Baked Potatoes with Cajun Shrimp were an awesome side!

HiPaula.I love your cooking shows and I really like this web site! I pulled up the recipe for Michael's Coffee Braised Short Ribs. I was wondering if there is something that can be used instead of the White Wine. We do not use wine because my husband is diabetic. There is just too much sugar in wine. He loves ribs so I am trying to find something I can fix for him. Please let me know. Thank you so much. Keep the recipes coming. I am always trying something new.

I use so many of your recipes--lemonade, pizza dough, Italian pasta salad, just to name a few. When I want to make something new, I always go to your website. Thank you for share so many great recipes with other cooking addicts.

I am cooking this again for my Mom's sisters and brother and their spouses. I loved it so much I'm cooking it again. What a great dish and super easy. I can't wait for them to try it! It was so good, the first time I made it, I ate the whole thing by myself. I didn't want to share. Thank you so much for this delicious recipe. P.S. I have put coffee in several other recipes and its absolutely fabulous. Thanks for the hint. PPS... Always serve with rice. Its the only way to eat a Southern dish!!
