Brown Sugar Pound Cake

Ingredients Add to grocery list

Cake:
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 16-ounce box dark brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
5 eggs
3 1/2 cups cake flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Frosting:
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
3 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 (1 stick) butter, softened
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan.

Using an electric mixer, cream together butter and shortening and add the sugars, 1 cup at at ime, continuing to beat. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift flour and baking powder together in another bowl and add alternately with milk to creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Add vanilla and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 2 hours.

To prepare frosting, mix together egg and milk and set aside. Place 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar in a heavy saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until melted and brown. Add water and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add remaining 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar. Mix egg with milk and stir into sugar mixture. Add buter, vinegar, and salt. Cook to softball stage (236 degrees F on a candy thermometer), stirring constantly. (A small amount dropped in a glass of water will form a soft ball. If you remove it from the water it will flatten out). Cool to lukewarm. Beat until creamy and spread on cake.

Hi Paula, I love looking at you on tv. Watching you has inspired me to want to cook again. I will be retiring in March 2012, I will be able to cook for my grandchilderns like I did for my kids. I have some of your magazins to help me get started. Can't wait to try your butter milk fried chicken. Love you Paula!!!!

This brown sugar pound cake is wonderful--we love it. We also like fresh apple cake so decided to try the pound cake recipe for the base of the apple cake by adding 3 large chopped granny smith apples. It makes a very large cake . I baked it in a 10x15 pan. Without a doubt the best apple cake ever.

We love this brown sugar pound cake. We also like fresh apple cake so decided to use the pound cake recipe for the base of the apple cake. I used 3 chopped granny smith apples . It makes a very large cake--used a 10 x 15 pan. Without a doubt the best apple cake ever!

Paula, I discovered your baked goods at my walmart and have become addicted to your Brown Sugar Pound Cake!!! Since I can't afford to pay $3.00 for the little cake,I decided I'd try to find your recipe on your website and make them myself. I found it but it also has a recipe for icing??? The one at walmart has a brown sugar cinnamon streusel topping.How do I make that?? I just love you,could listen to you talk all day.I especially enjoy you when you're on Oprah and Craig Ferguson,and of course with Rachel Ray too. I hope to some day be able to meet you in person.
