Jamie shows you how to make buttermilk in a pinch! Added on December 21 2009 | 18 Comments
As I was growing up my mom made Chocolate cakes using this mixture of milk and vinagar. I couldn't remember the amounts till I watched the video. Thank you.

Actually, you should only use fresh lemon juice with a cup of milk to make buttermilk. I'd think that vinegar would make it sour milk ... but what do I know? I don't bake a lot using it. I just know what my grandma told me - she always used lemon juice (and it had to be fresh) & milk if she didn't have the real stuff.
Jamie, your work is still excellent! ![]()

I'm sorry to say that is NOT buttermilk my friend but sour milk. My mother taught me this decades ago for sour milk in many recipes. It is as good as buttermilk in cooking but please don't call it what it isn't. I love the show and thanks for many great ideas.

I was soo glad to see this video...I've always come across recipes I've wanted to try but knew if I bought buttermilk and just needed a cup full the rest would go to waste since my dad. he's the only one in our house that would drink what I didn't use..He loved Buttermilk in a cup with cornbread. Thanks a bunch!!

Hi! Way back in 1952, I took Home Ed class. I learned how to make my own butter milk a long time ago. Great trick. A busy New Englander that loves to bake.

xlnt. so often a recipe calls for buttermilk, and either don't have on hand, or not willing to go to the store and buy a quart for just 1 or 2 cups. Buttermilk is a top rated food to use as a probiotic. not just for baking, enjoy a glass today and everyday!

Hi, I have done this on several occasions when I needed buttermilk for cornbread and didn't have any....I wouldn't say it's as good as buttermilk.....but it's ok????? I wish someone would answer the questions on here that people ask......I had not heard of lemon juice.....but that's nice to know.......as you don't always have buttermilk, but most of the time you would have white vinegar and or lemon juice, or even both.....I usually do...... P.S. I'm looking for an ENAMEL tea kettle.....would any one out there know where I could find one????? Thanks

You can also use one tablespoon of lemon juice to every cup of milk to make buttermilk.

Has anyone tried to use skim milk for this trick? Just wondering what the result would be since it's the only type of milk I buy.

Does it matter what type of milk is used, skim or whole?
