McCorrmick has pure vanilla extract at 41% alcohol. Would the homemade extract be the same? Or would it be as per whatever vodka you used? I make homemade vanilla schnapps and would really like to know, please.

Can I use Everclear to make Vanilla. Do I use it straight or dilute it and do I always heat the liquor before using it for vanilla?

I've made homemade vanilla with vodka, but I prefer some Bacardi Rum. I also let it set 6 mos to really set up the flavor.

Is there another alcohol that can be used? The mere smell of vodka makes me ill, and I can't have it in my house! I was considering using EverClear, but don't know if that will make the alcohol too strong.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I was wondering what happens to the alcohol in the vodka. When I smell the store bought stuff I don't smell alcohol. Is this really how it is made? Maybe I should look at he video again but I don't remember how long it takes to become vanilla extract. BTW, I love your Mom. smile Thanks again, Kristie

I never have warmedup my vodka. I split and scrape my vanilla beans and put into the pint of vodka. I shake every now and then and wait six months.My cousin in Arkansas says that's how she has done it for years and she is an excellant cook. I have watched your Mother for years and absolutely love her!

I am so excited to find this video making real Vanilla extract. I am known for my love of butter, Hellmans mayo and real vanilla extract. I usually get it from Mexico. Whenever a friend is going I ask them to bring me back some vanilla. Never is my wildest dream did it ever cross my mind that I could make my own. DUH! So off to the liquor store I go. Now it did cross my mind am I going to do this like I do my Christmas shopping. I always say that I buy one to give away and one for me cause I'm not going to give a gift that I don't like so I get me one also. Now am I going to drink the vodka on that 1 to 1 ratio? I might be a little tipsey before I through. Thanks again for inspiring me for greatness!

First of all, I love your recipes and ideas!! Hope to one day get to your restaurant in Savannah! I do have a questions about homemade vanilla....where can you buy vanilla beans. I don't recall ever seeing them in a grocery store. Please let me know....and keep up the good work!

What a great idea.. I use so much vanilla.. What do you think of using the vanilla flavored vodka?.. I will surely try this.. hope it's good and potent with the vanilla flavor... I do lots of baking..
