Branching Out

By Brandon Branch

The crisp air and spicy colors remind me how much I love this time of year.

Many of you know, Savannah is the perfect stage for a hauntingly fabulous Halloween. Our monster oak trees spin their webs of Spanish moss, creating a mood of mystery.  Paula loves celebrating each season inside and out so I like decking her house to reflect her personality. Rather than buying typical store decorations, I like creating a spooky-chic look. I’m thrilled to give you all a sneak peak at her living room mantle. If you like an alternative to the usual Halloween black and orange, this whimsical combination provides a more sophisticated look while still creating a ghoulish spirit.

Whether I’m creating seasonal decorations, styling a photo shoot or preparing for the show, I like to work with layers. You can use this same technique with things around your home. In order to achieve a layered look, be sure to combine size, height, texture and color.

On Paula’s mantel, I began by draping a combination of fabric remnants. By mixing fabrics, you create more interest and depth. Remnants are perfect for seasonal decorating because you can pick these up in fabric stores inexpensively. I used damask with cut-outs for the mantle scarf then added black velvet and netting.  Here’s a great no-sew hint: when using rayon fabrics, you can trim and cut out selected areas (like I did on the tips of the scarf) without having to finish the raw edges. I also keep fusible hem tape and fabric glue handy when working with textiles.

For the next layer, I selected a variety of objects and keepsakes that lend the look of haunting antiquity. I chose the large container on the left to hold the painted branches. This no-cost trick provides creepy drama and height, while the candelabrum adds surprising sparkle. I filled in with some of Paula’s favorite things I gathered throughout the house. In fact, the bird print came from Paula’s powder room! Don’t be intimidated to mix it up and combine different pieces from any hidden corner. In this case, I nabbed a cast iron lantern from the garden which provides the perfect home for a member of the watchful faux-crow family. Finally, fresh flowers in a mix of purple and plum add the perfect touch of color for that spooky-chic, Southern style.

Be inspired and let your creativity come to life by creating a ghoulish holiday that will thrill your group of goblins. Remember, the best décor is complete when it’s filled with family and friends.

Happy Halloween!

Brandon
