Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 1 hour 45 min
Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients Add to grocery list

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 cups sugar
5 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Special equipment: 10-inch bundt pan

Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cocoa and set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream together butter, shortening, and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, and mix well after each addition.

Add flour and buttermilk alternately to butter mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Add vanilla and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes or until cake is done.

Remove from oven and allow cake to cool in pan for 10 minutes. Invert onto cake plate and serve.

Is 1 hour and 45 minutes the correct cooking time? The current chocolate pound cake recipe I use bakes for only 1 hour and 15 minutes. The only difference is that Paula's recipe uses buttermilk and baking soda. Just want to check so I don't burn up my cake!

Paula, I work in a physical therapy/cardio pulmonary rehab facility and they have tv's stationed on the wall in various places and most days I do get to watch/listen to your program. Are these programs now upto date? Most of the time in the past I noticed they were a couple of years old. Just wondering if you were still taping your show. Please continue your program I really enjoy the recipes.

I have made this cake at least 10 times and it always turns out delicious. I made several this Christmas with good reviews from all. My picky 20 year old daughter loves this cake. AMAZINGLY, I HAVE USED THIS RECIPE FOR CAKES I DECORATE WITH FONDANT OR GUM PASTE. THE DENSITY OF THIS CAKE HOLDS UP WELL WITH THE EXTRA WEIGHT. YUMMY

I had to make this cake twice b/c the first time the recipe was to much for the bunt pan that I had and it over flowed in the oven. The second time around I did not use all the recipe. When it was done it turned out beautiful and it was extremely delicious. I topped it off with a fudge glaze and it was the hit of the party. Nice and moist in the middle with a chewy crusty outside.

I consider myself a decent baker but this recipe has baffled me. I have made this cake 3 times in the past 10 days and it has fell each time. I have used fresh ingredients and at room temp. I have used a bundt pan, loaf pan and a regular tube pan and it fell with all of them. I didn't open the oven door during baking. I am racking my brains trying to figure what is wrong. The only thing I do know, I WILL NOT TRY IT AGAIN!

I made this pound cake for the Cultural Center fundraiser of gumbo and dessert. This pound cake was a great hit. Everyone was coming up to me to ask for the recipe. This recipe will be a staple in my easy scrumptious recipe box! Once again, thanks Paula!
