Vegetable oil cooking spray
1 (18.2- ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 large egg
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

Filling:

Paula I love all your recipes but the best is gooey butter cake. I would like to make it but I'm not sure what toffee bits are and where to find them. Can you help me. I was sorry to here about your Diabetes. Please take care of yourself . I know it's not a easy thing to deal with, my family has a long history of the illness.

Paula, this has got to be one of my favorite recipes. In fact my husband, Ron, is the one who prepares these. And everytime I share them with anyone...the first comment..."can you send me the recipe"!

Paula! You are The Bomb! Looking for something quick and easy to take to Family Meal Night at church. Didn't use the toffee bits but this recipie still ROCKS! Love it! Made 2 pans and it was all gone! My suggestion so it won't brown too quick is to cover it loosely in foil till last 10 minutes or so.

Very good recipe! Just an addition though.. I was forced to freeze mine after I removed from the oven because they would not harden up. Delicious but EXTREMELY SWEET!

WOW! I believe this cake will be the death of me! I cannot tell you how incredibly good this is! You just have to make it yourself! I could not find any toffee bits either. I did buy some Heath Bars, froze them, put them in a plastic bag and beat the daylights out of them! PERFECT! I baked this for just over 50 minutes. My oven is not true on its temp, so don't be surprised if you need a few more minutes. I baked it until the entire top had a gorgeous caramel color to it. It was all nice and puffy, then it fell nicely after it cooled. She means it when she says WAIT UNTIL FULLY COOLED before cutting! It makes a mess and will BURN your mouth if you don't! Most importantly, you need a TALL glass of milk and about 10 minutes to enjoy 1 slice! Its just WONDERFUL! ENJOY! (do not share!)

Paula, have you ever tried making any of your gooey butter cakes with browned butter? I bet it would send them over the top! I thought the brown butter flavor would go especially well with this toffee version.

I've had these many times before at family gatherings since I was a little girl, we always called them Gooey Bars. After they were done baking, we would cut them into little bars that were easier for grabbing and nibbling on.
