Recipe Courtesy of Paula DeenServings: 16 to 20 servings
Cook Time: 1 hour 30 min
Difficulty: Easy
Cake:
Butter, for greasing pan
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
1/4 cup orange juice
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups peeled and finely chopped apples
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
Sauce:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Generously grease a tube pan.
For the cake: in a large bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, oil, orange juice, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and vanilla extract; and mix well. Fold apples, coconut, and pecans into batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a tester comes out clean, about 1 1/2 hours.
Shortly before the cake is done, make the sauce: Melt the butter in a large saucepan, stir in the sugar, buttermilk, and baking soda, and bring to a good rolling boil, stirring constantly. Boil for 1 minute. Pour the sauce over the hot cake in the pan as soon as you remove it from the oven. Let stand 1 hour, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.
I wish you would include nutritional information for all your recipes please. I am a type 1 diabetic and I get tired of having to figure out the carbs and calories on my own.

This recipe was time-consuming, but delicous! I love to cook and bake and do so often. This recipe was, by far, the best apple cake I've ever made or tasted. I took it to work and it was gone within an hour.

Paula, I just have to tell you that I love your Better then sex cake, have made it for my family and co-workers...I love to cook but can't always buy the things that I need since my husband has been out of work for two years and last March 17 He had to have 1/2 kidney remove (cancer) now I bake as a way to make a few dollars to help out seniors and homeless people. I never think about myself but of others that also need help. Keep cooking the best food in the world. Zaida

I made this cake last evening for a fundraising event for special needs children. It is absolutely one of the best cakes I have ever baked. It will probably become one of my signature cakes. Everyone loved it, so I guess I will have to make another one for our holiday party at work (boo hoo!!!). Thanks for another great recipe. Debbie

I made this cake with apples a neighbor had brought from an Apple Orchard in Ellijay. This cake was so delicious that my kids would sneak down in the middle of the night to get a piece of cake. My son requested this be his birthday cake... that's how much they loved it! It is delicious, but be forewarned.... you must grease the cake pan extensively so the cake comes out easily.
