Recipe Courtesy of Paula Deen Prep Time: 20 min
Cook Time: 50 min
Difficulty: Easy
Butter, for greasing pan, plus 16 tablespoons (2 sticks) butter, melted, divided
1 (18.25-ounce) package chocolate cake mix
3 eggs, divided
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
3 to 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly butter a 13 by 9-inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, 1 egg, and 8 tablespoons (1 stick) melted butter, and stir until well blended. Pat mixture into prepared pan and set aside. In a stand mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the remaining 2 eggs, and the cocoa powder. Lower the speed of the mixer, and add the powdered sugar. Continue beating until ingredients are well mixed. Slowly add the remaining 8 tablespoons (1 stick) of melted butter, and the vanilla, continuing to beat the mixture until smooth. Stir in nuts with a rubber spatula. Spread filling over cake mixture in pan.
Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Be careful not to overcook the cake; the center should still be a little gooey when finished baking. Let cake partially cool on a wire rack before cutting into pieces.

I've made other Gooey Butter Cakes, and they were all wonderful, so I couldn't wait to try this one. I did, however, use a yellow cake mix, and added chopped pecans to it. Then I added a layer of chocolate chips on top of the cake mix layer. It was FANTASTIC!!! LOVE PAULA DEEN!

Ms. DEEN, I've been a fan of yours for years now. Using your recipes as motivation to get back into the kitchen. My first dessert to make of yours was the Pumpkin Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. Now every holiday season you'd think I worked in a production kitchen as I'm making at least 6-10 a week for friends and family for different holiday parties. Well I've come across this version and don't have a chocolate cake mix in the pantry, however, I do have a Red Velvet cake mix (my strongest feelings are that RV is best made by scratch) that I needed for a fudge recipe. So I'm gonna take a chance and see how it turns out, plus with Valentines coming up this week, why not find another excuse to incorporate CHOCOLATE and RED. I'm trying to head back to Savannah soon, I need my fix from The L&S AND Uncle Bubba's. Much Love....

I was watching your show that included Liza Minelli. You baked a German chocolate cake that day that required part of the cake to be frozen, as I recall. Would you PLEASE send me that recipe. I have been puttering in the kitchen, doing different recipes of yours. That particular recipe has my wife Donna interested. But, I need your help. Thank you in advance for your time and help. I just made this and we all think it's YUMMY! My daughters opened the oven and saw it and broke out into song together. My daughters, myself, and my mother in law LOVE it. I did double the amount of nuts because it just seemed to need more than it called for and I'm glad I did. I'm making the original one later in the week for the first time...can't wait! Oh, we swore we'd save some for hubby when he gets off work in the morning...

I made this for a work buddy's birhtday and she as well as the whole office went CRAZY for it! A few ladies wanted the recipe and were shocked when I told them that I actually used FAT FREE CREAM CHEESE in my version! I had to cut the guilt down, somehow! LOL
