Servings: 2 pies
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 30 min
Difficulty: Easy
Pie:
2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2-sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 cup chopped walnuts, optional
Whipped Cream:
2 pint (4-cups) heavy cream
1/4 cup confectioner’s sugar
1/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 2 (9-inch) pie plates; set aside.
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated. Beat in the vanilla. Add flour mixture, a little at a time, and mix until fully combined. Fold in the 3 cups chocolate chips and, if desired, the walnuts. Divide the dough between the prepared pie plates and smooth the tops with a spatula.
Bake about 30 minutes or until pies are golden and slightly firm to the touch but still soft. If the pies begin to darken too much before they are baked through, cover with foil and continue baking. Let pies cool completely on a wire rack.
While the pies cool, whip the cream and confectioners’ sugar until soft peaks form (tips curl). Fold in the chocolate chips. Refrigerate whipped cream until ready to use. Spread the whipped cream over the pies and serve.

Hi everyone who reads this.... I just wanted to say how great I think it is the success that Paula and her family lucked into, my problem is reading her itinerary at the bottom where no cameras are allowed...after she and her family have become foodie "icons" they don't allow people to take their pic, unless through a professional photographer I may be wrong but their britches got a little too big now to take a pic of someone who was just like them not too long ago have a picture for free? God bless them. I do wish them continued success and she still is my fave on food network, or Ree Drummond is a close second. Bring back the days when you were one of us is all I am saying.... MP

Have you all made and served the whipped topping with this or offered it as an option people could put on? Do you serve it warm? Wondered about ice cream as well.

Hey Kim. Yes, the cake acts as the pie crust. I found it helpful to watch the video on this page http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paulas-home-cooking/chocolate-chip-pie-recipe/index.html It shows you more step by step how to do it, as I'm new to it as well! Hope it turns out great!

I have a question, since I am new to baking pies. It says "pie" on the recipe but not sure if I use a pie crust or not? Or does the "pie" act as the pie crust.
I hope someone can answer me, as I am planning to make this today for the Thanksgiving dessert since my 5 yr old daughter picked this one
Thanks...and Happy Thanksgiving!

Is the center supposed to be gooey? I baked this until the top was "more than golden brown" and the center was still gooey. Help! I love this recipe but don't want to make anyone sick.

Way to knock another one out of the park, Paula!!! Girl you have made my family think they have died & gone to Southern food Heaven! =)) I made this today after seeing it on the show as a "throw-together" because I had all ingredients on-hand; I wanted to see if it was good enough to make for Christmas for both my family & the in-laws since it made 2. Admittedly, I was afraid it would be too easy, like I had taken some short-cuts or something. I was definitely wrong!! 3 teenagers took out 1 whole pie in about 10 minutes, and it is definitely going to both Christmases!! Ah---ma--zing!!!
