A lovely apple dumpling recipe submitted by Jessica R. Cain

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients Add to grocery list

2 cans crescent rolls
2 granny smith apples
1 stick butter
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/3 cup splenda (or sugar)
1 (12 oz) diet Mountain Dew

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees

Peel and core apples.  Cut each apple into 8 wedges.  Roll each wedge in a crescent roll.  Place rolls in a 9 x 13 baking dish.  In small saucepan melt butter.  Once melted add splenda (or sugar) and cinnamon.  Mix well.  Spoon over crescent rolls.  Pour diet Mountain Dew over rolls.  Bake for 45 minutes.

Notes from the Paula Deen Test Kitchen:  Splenda is more difficult to mix in butter than sugar.  Mixes better if butter is melted.  In a small mixing bowl,  whisk together melted butter, Splenda and cinnamon. Remove the dumplings to a wire rack after cooking as the liquid still in the baking dish will make the dumplings soggy.  The Apple Dumplings taste like mini apple pies.

I use this recipe with peaches when in season and they are called peach enchiladas, just use any lemon lime soda but not diet!

What does the Mountain Dew do? Can't wait to try this - as it's just my husband and I. If I bake a whole pie some of it goes to waste. :-<

Seriously? Has anyone really been able to mix the Splenda into the melted butter? I'm an experienced cook but new to using sugar substitutes. When I stirred the Splenda into the melted butter I found it impossible to whisk and ended up with a taffy-like blob suspended in the butter - which then was nearly impossible to wash from my whisk - that is after I threw the blob away and melted a second stick of butter and used sugar to make this recipe. If there is a technique to getting the Splenda to blend would someone please share it?

Why do you have to use the mountain dew when making apple dumplings with crescent rolls? What would happen if you didn't use this soda?

This recipe looks amazing. Can you give us an aspartame-free variety without diet dew?

This is by far the best alternative to apple pie...i followed the recipe as is and it came out perfect,i made three batches and i just know my family is going to LOVE them. I took a taste and I can't believe how good they are, easy to cook and inexpensive!! Thumbs up! grin

I made these and they are so delicious! My family is asking for more. I cut the apples smaller. I cooked everything except the cresant rolls in a pot until all the butter melted. Then scooped out the apples with a slotted spoon and put in the cresant rolls. I poured the juice mixture over the apple dumplings and baked for 30 minutes until golden brown. YUMMY!

Thanks for the idea of using Splenda for the ones with Diabitis! This is a good idea if you don't want a pie!!! Do the apples get done? also what about the cresent rolls not burning? What is the idea of Mountain Dew? Thank you, Lana

These are delicious and are a hit wherever I take them. Scoop some ice cream in a bowl then spoon one of these and a little of the sauce from the pan in there and it's YUM-MEEEE.

I had printed this out this last weekend with full intentions of following the directions.  Well with not a moment to spare I threw everything except for the cresent rolls in a bowl mixed and then threw them on the rolls and baked.  I sliced the apples a little thinner and just put a two apple slices per cresent roll.  It took half the bake time and they were the biggest hit!!!  Thanks for letting me tweak your recipe a little.

I love this recipe and so does everyone at my church. When we have a special meal everyone requests that I make these. I usually prepare two large buffet pans of them. Great recipe and I use Dt. Mountain Dew in mine for those folks that may be diabetic.
