This is the best gravy I have ever tasted. I had this type gravy when I was in the Army, but it was called SOS (Shit on a Shingle). It is also a hearty breakfast that sticks to your ribs. My teenage sons and their friends love it. I cook a large breakfast every morning for my family. We always have eggs, some sort of of pork, or left over beef fillet from the night before, and a starch, such as grits or steal cut oatmeal . Protein is a must have in a healthy diet, as well as good fats, fruits, and vegetables. Sticky starches are what we should eat in moderation. They contribute to heart disease and diabetes more so than fats. Both of my sons are 5'10" tall and weigh 125 lbs. I weigh 99 lbs. So good southern cooking has done us well. Thanks for sharing this great recipe. The book was great too. Charlotte Groce

Paula... Excellent Sawmill Gravy! By far, the best we've ever eaten! However, I didn't have Half-and-half, so I substituted it with whole milk and used a 1/4 cup flour instead of 3 Tbs. Thanks for the recipe Paula and your website! "Country Cookin' Makes You Goodlookin'"

We all have health problems, sooner or later. You keep cookin', girl. You're the bomb, our cook, and our teacher -- not our doctor! Love ya Paula!

Paula Deen is no different than any other cook except she does it better... Okay so she is a diabetic, she had not been her whole life and her way of cooking is a reflection of her up bring and I'm sure she did not make all of the choices on keeping her health issues quite. I don't care what people say She will always be the BEST in my book,I watch cooking on tv everyday and they don't all cook for diabetic's. I love you Paula........Linda Haven Number 1 Fan forever !!!!!

Paula, Will you be writing a cookbook with diabetic recipes? My husband is a diabetic and just put on insulin. Would love some of your recipes made for diabetics.

Mine was tasty but presentation was awful- not light, white, and fluffy like the picture at all! Wonder what I did wrong? Turned out very greasy and oily. Should I have drained the sausage mixture? I'll try again some time smile

How funny. A friend had just been raving about their mama's Biscuits and Gravy. Something their mother made on family birthdays; my friends birthday is coming up, and 'mama' is long gone. I have a feeling a Birthday Brunch is in my future, with these as a surprise item on the menu. I tried these as a "test" .. LOL, makes more then one person SHOULD eat (thankfully i was able to save some for the next day). This was amazing. I also used some Freshly cracked pepper to add a bit of 'zip' just before serving.

6 Star Best Sawmill Gravy I have ever made. Made just small modifications. Added Savory to the sausage while it was cooking the flavour was fantastic. Highly Recommend it. sauted the Onion and garlic seperate from the sausage until lightly browned and added it to the sausage along with the cooking oil and butter I think it enhanced the flavour. All told an excelent gravy thank you Paula
