A Priceless Picture

A Priceless Picture

By Paula Deen

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but every time I look at this picture here, only three words come to mind: love, love, love!

I suppose it’s because this picture is what they call a “happy accident.” Chia had been taking photos for the website all afternoon and I was startin’ to fade. Then Jack shows up ‘cause he caught wind that we had a piglet on the set. It was just the pick-me-up I needed. We were thinking that surely Jack would want to sit with me and hold the pig because what little boy wouldn’t? But when we tried to get him to hold the little critter, Jack would have none of it, not for all the tea in China. If you’ve been around kids any, you understand how once they set their mind to something, it’s not likely they’re gonna budge. This was no exception. Jack wasn’t upset or anything; he just shoved his hands in his pockets and looked straight ahead, flashing the most genuine smile.

Chia captured that moment like the pro she is. The priceless look on Jack’s face and the beautiful light coming through the window was nothing short of perfect. And it wasn’t staged. It was a real moment shared between my grandson and me. I especially like how I’m glancing over at Jack, givin’ him this look that says I know full well what it means to be stubborn. See, sometimes we’re like two peas in a pod. We spent the rest of the day laughing and being mischievous, slowing down progress but having a real good time doing it. Funny thing is, that little pig turned out to be more behaved than either of us!

Y’all, I get my picture taken all the time. But this is surely one of my favorites, which is why I wanted to share it with y’all. It holds a special place in my heart and in my home—it’s the only one I display in my kitchen so I can look at it all the time. Pictures like that are rare and so are the moments. Be sure to treasure them.
