  • 1 (18 1/4 oz) package yellow cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 16 tablespoons butter, melted, divided
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 (16 oz) box powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350°.

Combine the cake mix, egg and 8 tablespoons butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla and 8 tablespoons butter and beat together.

Next, add the powdered sugar and mix well. Spread over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to over bake as the center should be a little gooey.

My husband adores this cake. He asks for it at least once a month! Easy, rich, and goes quickly.

Gooey Butter cak

Gooey Butter cake has been around in St. Louis since before I was born in 1965. This same recipe was given to me by a fellow St. Louisan in 1990. It wasn't something you made at home, it was something that you bought at the bakery.

This is a wonder

This is a wonderful recipe and a family favorite. I also tweaked it a little and used Black Walnut Extract and 1 Cup of crushed Black Wlanuts. Super delicious!

This is wonderfu

This is wonderful!!!! Everyone that has tried it has loved it!! I am making 3 versions to give as Christmas gifts. The original version here, once with spice cake & pumpkin pie filling, and one with Lemon cake & lemon extract. I plan on playing around with the different flavors in the future. Never can go wrong with a Paula Deen recipe!!!!
