There’s a little sayin’ that my baby brother Bubba and I are fond of: “Home is where you treat family like friends and friends like family.” In fact, we like it so much that we had it put up on the wall inside Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, the restaurant we started together.
You see, my family takes care of their own. Always have. Bubba was just sixteen when Momma passed away and Daddy had already been gone a few years. So I brought that tore-up little cherub-faced boy into my home to make sure that he was livin’ straight. He grew up into a fine man, started his own business in Albany and raised two beautiful children. But when things got rough, I brought him back under my wing, just where I like him.
In 2004, me and Bubba opened Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, and it is a perfect fit for my brother. He was practically born with a fishin’ pole in his hand. A ton of family photos decorate the walls of the restaurant and some of my favorites are the ones of Bubba fishing—especially the one of him holding his prize grouper that he caught right here in Savannah. (Though if you get the chance, check out the picture of Bubba and me in 1972 . . . when we were skinny!) Bubba and I share a good many qualities. We’re both hardworking and hard playin’. And we wanted the restaurant to reflect that. When you walk into Uncle Bubba’s, you feel right at home—especially if yours was filled with the sights and smells of Southern homecookin’ like Shrimp and Grits steaming and cornbread rising. We didn’t have to look too far for some of the best recipes to put on the menu: Aunt Peggy’s Fried Catfish will make you weep, Bubba’s famous Key Lime Pie is as smooth as butter, and my very own Fried Chicken will make you wanna slap yo’ mama, if I do say so myself. And the Char-Grilled Oysters and Fried Shrimp? Honey, don’t even get me started.
Besides the finger-lickin’ food, the location alone is worth the visit. Located between downtown Savannah and Tybee Island, the outside of the restaurant reminds me of one of the old oyster and shrimp houses from when I was growing up. But inside is like stepping into your grandmomma’s kitchen, from the warm welcome you get to the old fashioned chairs you plant yourself into. Even my grandbaby Jack feels at home. He loves staring into the koi pond out front or pretending to captain the little play boat out back. But me, I like relaxing on the back deck that looks out over the marsh, enjoying the breeze off the water and crackin’ crab legs to the beat of a live band.
It’s not always easy remembering to treat your family like friends—just ask Bubba and I’m sure he’d have a story or two to tell y’all. But at the end of the day, it’s all we have. Bubba and I have worked real hard at keeping our family close and we’re proud of what we’ve done together. So proud, that we want to invite y’all to come to Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House to be a part of it.
