Top Secret Chocolate Cookies

Ingredients:

2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup Dutch process cocoa powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
White Sanding sugar, for garnish

Directions

In a large bowl, add the butter and sugar and cream together with a hand mixer. Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture and mix until combined. In a medium bowl, mix the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients and continue mixing until incorporated.

Roll the dough into 2 logs that are about 2-inches high and 1-foot long. Wrap them in waxed paper and place in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Once thoroughly chilled, slice the cookies into 1/2-inch thick rounds and cover with sanding sugar. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes.

Remove to a wire rack to cool.

Very good cookies. I was searching for a recipe close to a cookie we get in St.Louis. I used 1 cup of chopped chocolate chips and they turned out great. Just wish I could get them a little more crispy. Will be making these again and again.

Oops! Forgot to put a rating before. Absolutely a 5. If I could give them a 10 I would!

These are excellent! A bit of crisp on the outside and soft and very chocolaty in the middle. We gave them away for Christmas. An easy recipe. My daughter and I made them together. Yum! We left off the sanding sugar. They were lovely!

We are sorry if this recipe was a bit confusing. There is no cream in the recipe. You are "creaming" the butter and sugar. They are a great cookie and we hope you love them! Libbie Summers, Paula Deen Food Editor

This recipe looks fantastic but in the directions it says to mix the sugar, butter and cream with a mixer but in the ingredients it doesn't list cream as one of them. How much cream am I supposed to use?

My grandson and I made these a couple night ago, and loved them. He suggested putting a little marshmallow cream between two cookies and making "Grammy sammiches".

I gave these as gifts at Christmas and recieved rave reviews. They have a wonderful chocolately butter taste. They are crisp on the outside but moist on the inside. Definitely a winner in my recipe box.
