1 1/2 cup self-rising flour
8 tablespoon (1 stick) butter
1/2 cup water
2 cup sugar, divided
4 cup peeled, sliced peaches
1 1/2 cup milk
ground cinnamon, optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.
Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt. Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping. Pour mixture over melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup. Sprinkle top with ground cinnamon, if using. Batter will rise to top during baking. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes. To serve, scoop onto a plate and serve with your choice of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

For those of you having trouble with the recipe, did you use SELF-RISING or ALL PURPOSE flour? That makes a HUGE difference in it rising to the top.

Hands down... best cobbler recipe in the world! I didn't have enough peaches, and "supplemented" with fresh blueberries. I thought my husband was going to pass out in delight! It was excellant with a nice big scoop of Natural Bean Vanilla ice cream! Thanks Paula! You're the best!

I did not have enough peaches so I had to use apple to make this and it was SOOOOOO GOOD and Easy! Me and my family LOVE you Paula!!!!

I think an ingredient was left out of the recipe - baking powder or soda maybe. The dough just sat in the bottom of the pan and was like paste. I threw it out.

My Husband cannot get enough of this recipe. He has me make this whenever we have friends over or when we go out to friends. I have made this same recipe and substituted many kinds of friut and berries. All of the varations come out beautifully, including the one I made with splenda for my diabetic Father-in-Law. Thank You from the bottom of my Husbands heart for such a simple and great recipe.

I have made many cobbler recipes trying to find one that tasts like my mother's (from Griffin, GA). Nothing came close until this one. I was having a hard time finding wonderful Georgia peaches so I used frozen. It was wonderful (can't imagine that canned would work as nicely). My husband and kids LOVED this! Don't skimp on the butter or be tempted to use a substitute. Have made many times now, always with wonderful results (have also made with fresh apples but peach is our family's favorite!) It's so easy, too. Try with homemade vanilla icecream on top - Yummy!!!

I rated this recipe before and as I said, the customers in my country store love it!! I bought some Granny Smith apples and made cobbler using this same recipe. They loved the apple cobbler even more. I added about an extra 1/2 cup of water and couple of extra tablespoons of sugar to apples. The extra syrup and sugar made the crust crispy. BETTER THAN APPLE PIE, LADIES! Keep 'em coming, Paula. I've never gone wrong with your recipes! Kathy, Danieltown, VA

I've been watching my Grandmother and Mother make their own special peach cobbler for years and have always enjoyed both versions but I hate to say that this recipe has both of theirs beat. (Sorry Granny, Sorry Mother!) I cut my recipe in half (since I live alone) and followed the instructions to the letter. It was/is the best I've ever had and so easy to make.

I have made this recipe several times. I double the number of peaches (depending on the size) and have used half brown sugar along with the white. I serve it warm with vanilla ice cream. I love making it because I get so many compliments for such a little amount of effort! Getting ready to make it once again for a co-workers birthday. Thanks for the great recipe!!

This recipe is delicious and easy! Comes out perfect every time. I used to have trouble making cobbler until I figured out the most important step. DO NOT STIR! Maybe that was why it didn't work out for a few. Great recipe.

I have been baking the Peach Cobbler recipe in The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook for years now, the only difference is that the ingredients are doubled but you cut down on the water to cook the fruit in. Also you use the same amount of butter as the first one. I was wondering why as my family and freinds love the other one. Linda, Texas

Hello, I am 50 years old, and challenged in the kitchen...I, however, used this wonderful recipe to make my FIRST Peach Cobbler...all I can say is THANK YOU; it came out splendidly!!! IT was SOOOOO DELICIOUS!!! I got so many compliments...tonight, I am trying my hand at using the same recipe by substituting Blackberries....I am so thrilled with the confidence this delicious easy to follow recipe has given me. I read Paula Dean's story of her life, and was so impressed with her so many genuine qualities, and my sister watches her show (I don't have cable)...so I liked Paula Dean from an intellectual standpoint...but now I am KNOW her better from actually trying and eating one of her recipes!!! Anyway, I am off to the kitchen right this minute to start my Blackberry Cobbler, so I was online to check out this recipe for using blackberries and I saw another person's comment saying they have done it, so I know I can do it, too...thank you, Paula Dean, for putting a cook or baker back in me!!! I can't wait to make this for my family who is coming to visit this week. Zellie, Austin, Texas

I made this recipe for some of the BEST cooks I know as a tasting for a fundraiser in my garden. I took out three tablespoons of water and added three tablespoons of brandy. I used white peaches, and they were really juicy so I didn't add all the juice. I also had to bake it about 10 minutes longer. Oh Boy... It was a hit!!! I served it with valilla Ice Cream on one of the hottest days this year and everyone loved it. Doing again and again. Thank You Paula. ( Just as a side note: One of my other friends brought your recipe for Salmon cakes. Oh my gosh... they will be served as well. You're awesome.)

I followed this recipe to a T. It was GREAT. Everyone loved it. We served it warm with vanilla ice-cream and it disappeared immediately. I will make this again and again for the great compliaments i got.

Paula recommends using fresh peaches with this recipe, as they work best. You could substitute frozen or canned. In the frozen method follow the recipe, substituting frozen for fresh. In the canned, do not drain the peaches. Just pour the peaches and juice in their sauce in a saucepan and heat. Omit the sugar that needs to go in with the peaches from the recipe. They are already sweet enough. Follow the rest of the directions as printed. Libbie Summers, Food Editor

If you are using canned peaches instead of fresh peaches, how do you adjust the recipe? Thanks - I can't wait to make this cobbler!

Paula's Peach Cobbler recipe is my favorite recipe in her collection! It saddens me that somehow it didn't work for you. Here are a couple of reasons why it might not have worked. 1. Your self rising flour might not have been fresh/ causing it not to rise (my gut tells me this was the problem, even from a new bag sometimes the leavening agent is past it's prime) 2. You did not allow your butter to heat up enough/make sure it is melted and hot, but not burned 3. You poured the peach syrup in the batter too early/make sure you spoon in the peaches first and then spoon the syrup over the top, when you first put in the peaches, your batter should already be looking a little "puffy". As far as the convection oven, I'm assuming you reduced the cooking temperature and time accordingly. Let us know how round two turns out! Libbie Summers, Senior Food Editor for Paula Deen

I couldn't wait to try this recipe. I love everything from Paula Deen. But something went horribly wrong. I can't figure it out. The dough didn't rise to the top, like it said it would. And the dough on the bottom was rubbery. I only have a convection oven and am still working out how to use it properly, this could be my problem. But how can I save this recipe? Can anyone help?

So FAST, EASY & DELICIOUS!!! Made for desert after Grandmother Paul's Fried Chicken and was a big hit! Used 1/4 C. rum with 1/4 C. water and a little less sugar when cooking the peaches, otherwise followed the recipe exactly. Such a versatile recipe - Will try this with apples next!

OMG! This is the best recipe ever. It was very easy and it tastes awesome. The best part is that the peaches can be substituted for any fruit you want to put in a cobbler. I didn't have peaches so I used apples and soft caramel candies. My husband took it to work at the fire department and it was gone by the afternoon. I am going to make it for Christmas with mixed berries. Thanks Paula!

I was completely out of sugar and used Splenda instead and it worked very well. I noticed the cobbler "swimming" in butter though and thought that I could've used less butter. I also used regular flour with the "conversion" that one of the raters suggested. It was very good.

To help the person that has had trouble with the crust rising to the top...make sure you are using self-rising flour. If you don't, it won't rise to the top.
Submitted on August 8, 2009

DEeeeeEEeLish! REALLY IMPORTANT - the recipe calls for SELF-RISING FLOUR. I think the last reviewer used all-purpose flour instead of self-rising flour. One conversion is: substituting 1 cup of all purpose/plain flour minus 2 tsp., and add 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt to make the full cup. ENJOY!! I sure did!
