Recipe Courtesy of Tina Butler submitted on getcookin.pauladeen.comServings: 16 servings
Cook Time: 75 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
1 package (18-1/4 ounces) German Chocolate cake mix
Cream Cheese Filling:
2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs, lightly beaten
Frosting:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup butter, cubed (not margarine)
3 egg yolks, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/2 cups flaked coconut
1-1/2 cup chopped pecans
Prepare cake batter according to package directions; set aside. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add eggs; beat on low speed just until combined. Pour half of the cake batter into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Gently pour cream cheese mixture over batter. Gently spoon remaining batter over top; spread to edge of pan. Bake at 325° for 70-75 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 1 hour. For frosting, in a heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, milk, butter and egg yolks .Cook and stir over medium-low heat until thickened and a thermometer reads 160° or is thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. Remove from the heat. Stir in vanilla; fold in coconut and pecans. Cool until frosting reaches spreading consistency. Frost cooled cake. Refrigerate leftovers.

I loved this cake. I served it to neighbors & 2 sets of family members. I got phone calls telling me how good it was and one wanted the recipe. I had one problem...my cheesecake filling sunk to the bottom of the pan instead of remaining in the middle. I did use neufchatel cheese. I don't care that the filling was at the bottom because it was great. The filling made the German Chocolate Cake over the top. The frosting I cooked to 175 degrees and it turned out perfect!!! (My first time making German Chocolate frosting). I definitely would make this again for a family picnic, work function, National Night Out...you get the picture. I would really like to know why my filling sunk to the bottom though.

I LOVE this cake! I make it every year for my boyfriend's birthday. The cake is much better when allowed to cool in the fridge overnight. I'm not sure what the "professional" chef's issue was because it is delish!

love this cake..I've made it several times and my fam loves it.. If you made the cake itself homemade its even better but that's to much work so I just use the box cake. The frosting is what makes it taste homemade...

My husband requests german chocolate cake every year for his birthday, so this recipe sounded like a great twist on his favorite. It was amazing! I wasn't expecting it to be this good, but it was. The only thing I did wrong was use too much cake batter on the bottom which didnt leave me enough for the top, but even with this mistake, it turned out wonderful! Thanks for the great recipe, its definitely a keeper!

This cake was awful and ruined my 4th of July. It never would cook completely in the middle (and I consider myself an experienced cook) so I know it was not me or my oven. Wasted $14.00 worth of ingredients for this. I do not recommend this cake at all.

My family and I loved this recipe! I will definately add this recipe to my collection and make it again soon. On the other hand, the cream cheese filling did not add much flavor in my opinion. I could not distinguish the cream cheese from the rest of the cake. The topping was just excellent. I still have one more piece to eat and after 5 days the cake is just a fresh and moist as the first day.
