Prep Time: 20 min
Cook Time: 40 min
Difficulty: Easy
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
2 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable shortening, plus more for pan
1 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
Chocolate gravy, recipe follows
Chocolate Gravy:
1/3 stick butter
2/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cocoa
2 cups whole milk
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in the shortening with a fork until it looks like cornmeal. Add the buttermilk, a little at a time, stirring constantly until well mixed.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 2 or 3 times. Roll out the dough with a floured rolling pin to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut dough into circles with a 2-inch cutter.
Place the biscuits in a greased iron skillet. Gently press down the top of the biscuits. Brush the biscuits with half the melted butter and bake for 14 minutes or until golden brown. Brush the hot biscuits with the remaining butter. Split the biscuits in half and ladle Chocolate Gravy over the hot biscuits.
Chocolate Gravy:
Heat butter in a cast iron skillet over low heat. Mix in sugar, flour and cocoa. Slowly pour 1 cup of milk into the skillet and whisk well to remove lumps. Whisk in remaining milk, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick, being careful not to scorch. Serve hot over biscuits.

I'm so glad to find this recipe for Chocolate Gravy. When we were little it was a treat for us to get this on Friday mornings. Our mother worked Monday thru Thursday. Raising six kids was hard for her. But her cooking this for us on Fridays was a treat. Now I pass it on to my girls is a gift.

Years ago around 1955 I was dating a girl from Tennessee and she kept telling me about the great chocolate gravy that her grandmother use to make. So when I finally got to go to Tennessee and meet her granny, we were invited over for Sunday dinner. At that time it was a big deal whenever company from the north came to visit. The whole family and relatives were invited over for dinner. Directly in front was this very large tureen of chocolate gravy. After filling my plate with the roast beef and various vegetables, I reached over and ladled the chocolate all over my plate. Everyone around the table started to laugh. When I asked what was so funny as she made the chocolate just for me, they all chimed in. And said, "Yes, but you don't put it on your meat and potatoes". I had told that story to many people over the years and not one of them ever heard of chocolate gravy. Needles to say I was ecstatic when I saw your recipe for chocolate gravy and biscuits. I am going to have it for breakfast.

My mother always made chocolate gravy and I just thought everyone knew about how to make it. I soon found out after moving out west that hardly anyone knew what it was. I guess it's a southern thing but I grew up eating it. I made it for my family and had to make it for the guys that I worked with and they simply loved it. It was always requested when we had breakfast on the graveyard shift. My sons now make it for their family, my sister made it for her family so it's a tradition in our family. There's nothing like it on a cold morning.

So I just tried making this because my mamaw is the only person I know that can make this stuff right and it's so good. The recipe is dead on and accurate. However, it was a bit too sweet for my taste so next time I make it, I will be using a little less sugar. Delicious!!!

I have been eating this chocolate gravy since I was a little girl. I now make it in the microwave. Just heat the milk 2 minutes, mix the cocoa, sugar and flour, pour into milk and whisk to remove lumps. Then heat 1 minute and stir. Continue heating 1 minute at a time and stirring until desired thickness.

Pour over biscuits and top with slices of butter. Yummy. Hope you try it. I am sure you will enjoy it. I am trying your receipe for breakfast this weekend.. enjoy Debbie Sparks

My Grandma Gracie use to make this for us when we went to KY. to see her. The Chocolate gravy is also good on scrambled eggs too. WOW! What a flash back in time for me. She use to make a big old batch and by the time brakfast was over the gravy was gone. My dad likes to put it over cured ham. I have never tried it that way. But this summer I will get a chance and let ya know how it is. I have tryed to make this gravy but it never taste like hers. It turns out good, but it is always better when she makes it.

Hello from Oklahoma, I have heard of chocolate gravy from my oldest son. While in high school his best friends' mother made chocolate gravy and he loved it. I thought it had coffee in it but that could be another variation. I think your web site is delicious and you are stunning. Thank you for being kind enough to share! Sincerely, Kenna Mooney Kimbrough

My Grandma Mobley use to make Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy and when my mother married my father she also learned to make it. When I mention this dish to friends they cringe, but they don't know what they are missing. My southern roots run deep and this dish reminds me of who I am. Thank you

I had never heard of Chocolate Gravy before until I was 41 years old. I spent the weekend with a dear friend in Cookeville, TN and she made it for me for breakfast! I've been hooked ever since although I make it as a dessert and is wonderful poured over graham crackers or vanilla wafers! You can lighten it up by leaving out the butter and using lowfat milk. I prefer to use evaporated milk.
