Recipe Courtesy of Paula DeenCayenne pepper gives these traditional snacks a real kick.
Servings: 5 dozen
Prep Time: 8 min
Cook Time: 15 min
Difficulty: Easy
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 cups self-rising flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cup 1/2 lb shredded sharp Cheddar, at room temperature
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Sift together the flour, cayenne, and salt and set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and cheese until blended. Add the flour mixture slowly, beating at low speed, then continue to beat for 5 minutes, until very creamy, scraping down the sides of the bowl several times.
Using a cookie press with a star tip, make 3-inch-long cheese straws, leaving at least 1/2 inch between each on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to racks to cool.

Don't make this recipe! It is not right - something is way off. I made it and it was a flat, oily, and couldn't pick it up. I didn't read the comments until too late. I was making them for a party so I went back on line and found another recipe that worked great.

Didn't love this recipe. I didn't like the texture and thought they were too salty.

My grandmother passed down her recipe to me & the only difference is she used 1 tbsp. paprika & 1 1/2 tbsp. garlic powder. YUMMY!!

My straws turned out extremely brittle and tasted like powder. I wonder if the recipe should use all purpose flour instead of self rising.

Paula, To be honest with you your recipes are the only ones I cook with because they are down to earth and also what I grew up with. Between you, Bobby, and Jamie your recipes are mainly ingredients that are easy to get and easy to make. There is not one recipe that I made for the family they didnt rave about. I started a book with just your recipes in it. Keep up the great work. Love Bill

I would like to know if you have other baking gifts ( like cheese straws) that would be great for other holidays , other than christmas?

Love these cheese straws.Have a question....what brand of cookie press do you use? My dough is thick and I have not been able to find a press strong enough. So,I've been rolling my dough out and cutting it into strips.Works ok, but would like to find a cookie pree strong enough to use.On the video you use a press. Thanks, Ed Gann

I made this recipe, but I didn't use a cookie press. Instead, my kids and I had a great time together cutting them and making them into their favorite shapes... Awesome Mom/Kid project, and the outcome was yummy!

Followed the directions to the best of my ability, so apparently the recipe is off. They took forever to become "light brown" and they STILL fell apart after being thoroughly cooked. The first 2 batches were overcooked because I waited for them to be brown hoping they wouldn't fall apart, and they tasted horrible. The 3rd batch has a nice taste, but it literally melts the second it touches your tongue if it doesn't crumble completely before it enters your mouth. Very disappointed...
