I found this recipe 6 years ago, a few months after my grandma passed away... I was eager to try this recipe since I am an avid pumpkin pie fan, and I had some jars of my grandma's own canned apple butter still! Needless to say I fell in love! I have been put in charge of making this pie every Thanksgiving since!! I agree with the other posters, homemade apple butter is a must (and really not that hard if you use a crockpot). I highly recommend this recipe, and hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!

I wasn't impressed with this pie at all. I really thought I would be because of all the good reviews. I followed the recipe to the T and do not taste the apple butter at all. The consistency wasn't good either. It came out more of a pudding texture and I'm surprised it even held together in slices. Not a fan of this recipe =(

I made this pie for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit! My husband, who's not a fan of what he calls "squash pie," loved it, so it's become a holiday staple. One important caveat -- do NOT use store-bought or commercially prepared apple butter!! The first time I made it, I used apple butter I'd made myself (with my grandmother's stamp of approval). When I used some I'd bought from the grocery store it was terrible. Good apple butter shouldn't be the color of molasses. Find a local crafter or consult the "Blue Book" and consider making your own. This year I made and canned a big batch using organic apples and sugar, as well as Saigon cinnamon. It's probably the very best stuff I've made, and I can't wait to try it in this pie!

The tartness of the apple flavor wasn't for me. But if you like a less-sweet option and a little bit of a sour bite, this pie has great texture and bright crisp apple flavor.

I made this pie for a church dinner on Sunday. It was so easy to put together, smelled fantastic, and tasted even better. It is very tender and has a nice tartness and spice from the apple butter. I'm planning to make it again for our Family Thanksgiving Dinner!
