Recipe Courtesy of Paula DeenServings: 8-10 servings
Prep Time: 8 minutes
Cook Time: 25-30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
1 teaspoon each dried basil, cumin, and dried oregano
Salt and pepper
3 cup canned crushed tomatoes
2 lb lean ground beef
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
2 cup chopped onion
2 cup chopped green bell pepper
2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 lb box elbow macaroni
2-3 cup grated cheddar cheese
Cook the macaroni according to package directions; drain and set aside. Heat the oil in a skillet; add the peppers, onion, and garlic, and saute until soft. Add the ground beef and saute until browned. Add the tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste, and the basil, cumin, and oregano. In a large bowl, combine the macaroni and the beef mixture. Spread this mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Top with the cheese and bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is lightly browned and bubbly.
Cook’s Note: Ground turkey or chicken can be used in place of beef, if desired.

This is a family favorite. I have been making this for a few years now and my oldest son can eat almost a whole 9x13 pan of this. The whole recipe is good enough for a house full of men. I usually only make half of this. I did make a few changes. I double the basil and oregano (even for half) and add just a bit more of the cumin. I use a 26 oz can of crushed tomatoes for the half recipe and we like it better because we can taste more of the sauce. And as always...plenty of cheese.

Dear Paula; Can I use Ground turkey instead of regular ground beef? My family don't eat ground beef. If that's O'kay please let me know. Thank you respectfully yours, Timothy Williams

Agree with the others who said it lacked flavor. Reminded us of Hamburger Helper.

Before I made this recipe I looked at all the reviews and noticed a lot of people said they thought something was lacking. But I still wanted to try it. So I used about 7 cloves of garlic. Half a green pepper and half a red pepper. I sprinkled my beed with meat tenderizer, and I also downsized the beef to only a 1 lb. After adding the beef and browning it I added a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and a squirt of ketchup. I also added in some red pepper flakes and a dash of chili powder. I also added in about a tablespoon of finely chopped jalapenos.
After I added the tomatoes I added a dash of milk into the mix and a tablespoon of butter. And I also mixed my noodles with a tab of butter before adding it to the mix. Let me tell you this came out amazing!!!!! My whole family loved it. I'm actually making it for the second time as we speak. It was full of flavor and just mmmm mmmm goood. ![]()
