Get Grillin’
View Previous Notes from the Kitchen
Summer is here and the smell of barbecue is in the air! Which makes it time for getting your barbecue grill ready for the season. Some folks will take one look at their grill and decide to just go and buy a new one, mainly because it got put away without any cleaning. Many people don’t realize that it really doesn’t take a whole lot to clean up that old grill once you get started. Just devote a little time and elbow grease to cleaning your grill and you’ll be ready for backyard barbecue parties in no time.
To start getting that grill ready you need to remove anything that is not tied down. From there you can start cleaning the inside of the grill, removing the loose gunk with a stiff wire brush. Then with some soap and water scrub all the burnt on stuff right out of the grill. A water hose can help to quickly rinse the inside of the grill when you are done scrubbing. A light coat of cooking oil sprayed onto the inside of the grill will help prevent any rusting, so that your grill will be usable all season long. Now work on cleaning the parts that you had removed earlier. A sink full of hot soapy water will work best when cleaning these parts. Depending on the condition you may have to let them soak for a while. When they are ready use your wire brush and scrub off all grease and burnt on gunk. Once these are cleaned and rinsed, spray with a light coat of cooking oil and place them back into the grill. Make sure you pay special attention to the grill grate. A dirty grill great will stick to anything that you place on the grill and rob you of those great grill marks that are the hallmark of the grilling master.
For gas grills, you will want to check all connections and hoses to ensure that there are no leaks. Once you have inspected the grill, you should perform a quick operations test to guarantee that the grill does indeed work. If one or more of your burners doesn’t generate much of a flame then it may be because a gas jet or the venturi tube has become clogged. If these are clogged, turn off the grill and let it cool. Once cool enough to touch you should be able to use a small bit of wire or q-tips to clear the blockage. If your efforts do not clear them, you can buy new ones online. If your gas barbecue grill uses briquettes and you have already got a few seasons out of them it would be a good time to replace them too.
Once you have cleared any blockage you can check all the gas connections by coating them with a 50/50 mix of dish washing liquid and water. If there is a gas leak you will see bubbles forming in the mixture. If tightening the connections or replacing the seals does not cure the problem, then take your grill in for service before using if you feel it is worth whatever minimum charge they may have, or buy that new grill you have been secretly coveting.
While this does not cover all situations, if you follow these simple hints and tips, your barbecue will provide another season of great barbecue. Despite the fact that your grill is freshly cleaned inside where the food goes, if the outside looks dirty this can dampen the appetite… So make sure that you devote time to cleaning up the outside of your grill as well. Once you’ve got your baby all clean inside and out buy a grill cover so it stays clean. A spare propane tank or a propane level indicator is a good idea too, so that you do not run out of fuel while cooking ribs. All that is left to do is invite your friends over for a first day of summer backyard barbecue party.
Thank you to our friends at Weber Grills for donating a Weber One Touch Gold Charcoal Grill. Just leave us a comment and we’ll be picking one lucky winner to ship the grill out to on June 1st. Limit one entry per IP address. Unfortunately we are limited to shipping to addresses in the United States. Good Luck!
Thanks for the good info. I really need to work on my grill. I love Weber and have a small gas grill that I will clean out and you just reminded me to put it on the Memorial To Do List.

I have used Weber’s gas for many years (over 23) and charcoal more recently. I am NEVER disappointed on how it grills. Turkey’s are fantastic. Here’s hoping I’m the lucky one - could use a new one!

My parents always cooked on a Weber grill and now my children cook on Weber’s. I have a new man in my life. We are getting into the grillin’ scene again. I am finding out that I have missed a huge part of my summer fun. Not only the grillin and the eating are fun but hunting for new recipes, the relaxing and conversation during all of it are so nice. I hope we all could win but only one can so I pray it is me.

I’d love to get a new grill for my hubby. He has been off work for over a year now, because of injury at work. It has been difficult to find a new job, because he can’t do any phyical labor job and with the econmy what it is today it hasn’t been easy to find another job, so this would give my guy quite a boast in his morale!

Weber is a name that America trusts. When you hear the name “Weber” you think of BBQ fun with great food, family & friends.
We live at the beach in southern California & would be honored to be the recipient of the Weber One Touch Gold Charcoal Grill.
We BBQ year round. A group of my 24 friends, The Skyline Sisters gather at each other’s homes & beach to grill & girltalk. Everyone wants a place to gather and create memories. I can think of no better place than around a Weber Grill!

I definitely need this grill! (“Mine is plum wore out.”) Those of us down south use our grills all year round and that takes its toll. Not only do we use it for family and social occasions during good weather, during ice storms (“when the power goes out”)we rely on our grill to cook all that good food that is defrosting in the freezer. I would think I was in high cotton if I had a new Weber grill.

Having a Weber to grill on would be like flying a piper jet…..does it get any better?
By Joyce Hamilton on May 22 2009
With the ecomony the way it is lately, eating “out” in the backyard helps us save money, is a better more healthy way to eat and by not using the oven or stove it saves on our air condioning bills. A new Weber grill would “fill the bill” and set the stage for the perfect economical summer backyard “staycation” for our family!!! (Look, I made a rhyme!!) WOW!!
By Linda Howard on May 22 2009
My husband and both love to cook, grill, smoke, you name it. Weber makes great grills, we have used Weber products for years. Paula, you are the greatest! Hope you have a wonderful holiday! Keep grillin’!

I’ve never had a Weber Grill, but I would love to have one. I have bought a grill the last of the season from Wal-Mart and parts were missing. I’ve been back 3 times to get parts and unable to get it to work. To late to carry it back. I’ve used a barrow unilt the bottom burned out and replaced with tin in the bottom until it was unuseable. I love to grill for my family and friends. If I win, I’m sure that I will enjoy using it. Carol Cook 5-22-09

My husband is the “Grill King” in our family. His grilled bacon wrapped tenderloin is OUT OF THIS WORLD! He loves cooking on a charcoal grill. When we had a gas grill it would flair up and burn everything and not cook evenly. He said the only gas grill he would ever buy would be “The Weber”. My brother and father swear by their Weber. We will get one, one of these days! We love you Paula!

Everyone has told us a Weber grill is the best, it will last the longest. That has been our problem we have to buy a new grill about every two years and I`m sorry to say we haven’t bought a Weber yet. I grill all year long, in the winter I watch the snow melt off the grill as it heats up. Maybe someday we`ll listen to good advice. Thanks for the clean up tips, its still not one of my favorite jobs!!!!!

We had never owned a grill before till one of our neighbors donated one to us back in Arizona. I always feared cooking out on a grill until recently I overcame that fear, when our home gas was shut off for nonpayment. I had no other choice but to use the grill and I LOVE IT!!! I love the taste it gives the food I cook and my family enjoys the meals I cook for them.

Love Weber grills. The only grill we own. My husband keeps hinting for another one. The Weber does such a great job and since its what we do the majority of our cooking on I can’t complain. We are lucky enough to have grilling weather all year here, so we use ours till it falls over. Love it during the holidays too! Grilling a turkey is a tradition!

I just love all the tips on the grill. The Weber grill sounds great. It would be wonderful to win a new grill as mine is really old. I got it from my disabled brother who could no longer use it. I’ve taken care of him for 33 years, but this charcoal grill is 25 yrs. old and almost too old to use now. Our family sure could use the fun from a new grill.

I LOVE Weber Grills. As a matter of fact, I have to buy another Weber this summer because my last one was given away by mistake. Last summer I had some items in the garage to donate to a charity. My teenage daughter was the one that was at home when the Truck came that day. I had told her earlier that the items to donate were marked. I would love to own a weber charcoal grill. The grill I have is on it last leg. Literally. I think Charcoal grilling is better than gas grilling. Great suggestion, spraying the grill with cooking oil to prevent rusting.I watch Paula every day and love her recipes. I just met the whole family, Mother’s Day wish come true.
Happy Grilling everyone.
Thanks, Karon

Hey Paula,
I love all the tips on upkeep of the different types of grills. I am a newlywed, just married in December. My husband and I are building a deck on our home now. The Weber grill would be a welcome on our new deck. Thanks for all the tips. Lots of love from my home to yours, Angie

Thanks for the tips on getting the grill ready for summer. Gosh, there’s nothing like the flavor of charcoal cooked food. My father had a Weber grill for years and it was great… I haven’t grilled for years but go outside and can smell the neighbors cooking out. I have a cast iron camping grill but can’t lift it even to set it out for big trash day. It’s such a rusty mess all I do is look at it taking up space in the garage. How great for the Weber winner! Thanks again for the tips.
By Pam Neumair on May 24 2009
Grillin out ROCKS!! I love the smell and of course the taste!!! Thank You so much for all the information. I would to give this grill to my hubby he does at grillin’. He and I have been married for almost 10 years and he hasn’t disappointed me yet!! Oh and to let yall know in The Deen Family cookbook there is a recipe Michael’s company comin’ grilled steak and veggies. Well you have to try it IT IS SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!
By Cindy Wright on May 24 2009
I have four kids who love food on the grill, but we don’t have a good grill except for a table top version. It is clogged right now, so I am going to try to clean it and use it today. If it doesn’t work we may have to wait til next year for a new one. So,I thank you for the information on cleaning it because it was fired up the other night and I thought my hair was going to catch on fire! Then we tried again and almost burned the chicken. You have a great holiday and keep those recipes coming!

Thanks Paula for all you do. I love to watch your shows and feel welcome in your home. I miss my home in Georgia as we moved away 10 years ago after our military career went into retirement. I am a grilling novice and am trying to better my skills. My husband has cancer and I’m trying each day to come up with new stuff that might appeal to him. He has to eat but the chemo has taken his taste and appetite. He seems to like my grilling. Who knew? Thanks again.
By Pam on May 24 2009
Even though we live in the snow belt, we grill all year long with it on a deck outside the back door. Nothing tastes better than a steak from the grill. Thanks to Weber for the donation and to you for the offer
By Beth on May 24 2009
We love to grill and use charcoal and gas. We even smoked a whole turkey. I’ll grill anything, and have used everything from a tiny hibachi to charcoal to gas. We love Weber products, they last such a long time, are a good value, and you’ve got to love their shape. As a kid in the 60’s we had the basic Weber grill, and we dragged it out of the garage every year for hot dogs and burgers, and of course making S’mores while batting the mosquitos, it brings back good memories.
By flamingolady on May 24 2009

We used to own a Weber and loved it. When it needed replacing after 30 years, my husband bought a Holland cooker. Now it’s nice, but it isn’t a GRILL!! I would love a grill again! The food tastes like summer and family on it! My sisters, daughter, and neices enjoyed a fun-filled meal at The Lady and Sons this past April. What a wonderful restaurant and Jamie is really cute! Savannah is beautiful.

Hi Paula,
We have had a gas grill since I don’t like the taste of charcoal fluid. My husband became addicted to charcoal cooking after finding a charcoal starter. The only charcoal grill we have is a portable, about 12 in x 12 in. He is in the process of making a piece to fit inside the gas grill to convert it to charcoal. I have offered to buy him a Weber and he loves them but just a little out of our price range. He would be a wonderful spokes person for Weber if he was the lucky winner.
By Grannie Annie on May 26 2009

Another great reasons for me to love grilled foods is because that is when its my husband’s time to cook! So when he cooks that makes every day special to me. He would love a new grill allowing us to have more people over to have a great big bbq party!

By Rebecca Graham on May 27 2009
Sometime one Webber grill is not enough. Meats or fish on one grill and veggie and fruit on the other. I sure would like to give my husband the second grill for Father’s Day. Like you, Paula, have to keep that man happy!!!

Miss Paula,
Wonderful tips on grilling. Veggies are wonderful when grilled. The grilled onion recipe will be used soon. Vidalia onions are in the grocery stores here. My husband bought a five pound bag of Vadilia so we will be using the recipe many time. My husband needs the second grill just for veggie.
Thanks for your ideas.

I had mentioned that we cleaned up our old gas grill years back and put it away… I forgot to add that the next year, as soon as weather permitted, we took out all of the gas lines and the tank and all and we use the shell as our charcoal grill. It really does just taste so much better. It takes a good griller to cook with charcoal though. My man does it good, but I have to admit, without the knobs to control the heat…I’d be out of my element.
By Crystal corle on May 27 2009

My ex did all the grilling, so he kept the gas grill and I wound up with an elctric table top delio. Just doesn’t come close to the taste of food cooked outside, especially on a charcoal grill. I found an easy way to clean grates & grills is with oven cleaner. Just put them down on newspaper outside and spray them down. After a while you can hose all that burnt on food off.

Our first born has left the nest - finally in his first job where he pays the bills. As he moved, he found our Weber (wedding gift from 1983) and said that it is time for us to buy a new one and he would take this off our hands - we LOVE our bbq!
By OlyveOyl on May 29 2009
The charcoal pan on my old grill just turned to dust. I don’t think my cookie pans are going to work. I could use a new one, I think.

A new Weber Grill is on the top of our wish list, our Weber gas grill is barely alive anymore, it is 10+ year old. We have decided it’s not worth the money to fix it when a new Grill would be more practical. Great cleaning tips, I have printed them out for the new grill.
By Nadine L on May 30 2009

Our WEBER is a trooper!! My husband has
a reputation for an excellent griller and is
always asked to grill. He attributes his
accomplishment to his Weber grill. We
received our Weber as a wedding present
in 1991 and it has been tried and true.
My husband will not retire the grill and
invest in a new one because he has bonded
with his grill as an old friend!! Thanks
for all the great grilling you’ve given us
and many more years to come!!

Our grill is about grilled out - we use it 3-4 times a week year round - even in the snow!
By Susan B on May 31 2009
I LOVE the grilling site. Loads of good recipes I’m dying to try! Our grill is charcoal. It’s handmade out of an old beer keg that was cut in half horizontally, hinged, with a handle for the lid welded on as well as 3 foot lag bolts for the legs. Although it’s very cool and a great conversation piece, I would love to have a new Weber GAS grill! I like the convenience of gas and need a larger cooking surface.
By lucilou on May 31 2009
It’s that time of year for cooking out. Love to cook, but don’t have a grill. Neighbors are nice enough to invite me over when they cook out. Would like to return the favor.

I love this grill! I have big plans to do a lot of grilling all throughout the summer and well into fall. We have a tabletop grill that uses propane but it’s so tiny we usually don’t bother. ![]()
Burgers, brats, franks, chicken, steak… I can almost smell it grilling up in the back yard as I type!
By Katharina on May 31 2009
There is nothing that says summer than being able to stand outside, enjoy the summer air and fix dinner on the grill.
By Deb on May 31 2009
A charcoal grill would be the wish,
Of my sweet husband and outdoor guy,
He’s smart and sharp and loves to cook,
He’d grill away, and that’s no lie.
He has ideas of great marinades,
His steaks and burgers are the best,
The shish-kabobs are just amazing,
His recipes top all the rest.
By Elsie on May 31 2009
We have the guy next door that every night all year long he grills out on his charcoal grill of coarse he has one of the biggest, best grills there is. Well right now as I sit entering this contest my husband is trying to get the charcoal grill going, our grill has the bottom rotted out so basically there is no bottom, he took a smaller rack from another grill we had thrown away and put that in bottom so that it holds the charcoal. With one income a new grill is out of our budget.
By Tammy Kennedy on May 31 2009
We grill out even in the winter here at our house. I love the taste of grilled food and it keeps me thinking of warmer weather all year long! I hope I can give this weber grill a new home on my covered deck. Thanks for the chance to win!
By Rebecca on May 31 2009
I’ve been looking and reading about the Weber grill for a while. The grill I have in my back yard is not a Weber and seen it days. At this time I can not afford a new one due to economical circumstances. It will fit perfectly in my back yard with my canvas chairs.

COOK ON. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR RECIPES.
By Donna D. Lowery on June 02 2009
I grill year round, best way to cook! I also watch Paula and her boys year round. One important tip; always clean your grill after use, moisture on the ashes will create acid which will eat up your grill even if made from pipe.
Even breakfast is better on the grill!
Hey Paula, I lived in Savannah as a kid. Went to Isle of Hope school, met Jesus at Cresthill Gardens Baptist Church. Lived on Dutchtown Road. Thanks for entertaining us as well as giving us recipes.
By James R. Hart on June 02 2009
My husband never enjoyed grilling although we’ve had a gas grill for years. All our married life I’ve been envious of our friends who felt so at ease having us over for everything from burgers, pork tenders, ribs, etc. When I asked why they enjoyed grilling so much it came down to one answer. The Weber grill made it easier, tastier and less hassle. NOW the children and I are getting him a WEBER grill for Father’s Day. Hooray for us - we found out the secret!
By Rosie Broome on June 02 2009
Ms. Paula…you are the cats’ meow! You and my mom are so alike in the kitchen! It’s a hoot!
I really, REALLY need a new Weber grill! The one I have is over 35 years old and literally falling apart…one wheel gone, wood handle disentegrated years ago, rusting out on the bottom but it still works and I bought a new grate this spring!
Please think of me when y’all choose a winner! Better yet, choose me instead of just thinking about me!
Oh, shoot…this ended two days ago.
By Kimberly on June 03 2009
We are serious grillers. We have 2 gas grills, 2 brinkman smokers and 2 outdoor pits for smores. In our opinion you can never have enough grills. Different meats and veggies all grilling at the same time, yum, makes me think I am on the show with Paula every time we have a cookout. Our home is where the heart for grilling is, always someone dropping by to eat and another grill would just add more food, fun and friends. Come to Atlanta Paula, you are more than welcome!!!
By Kreg & Jody Simmons on June 04 2009
It really is true that you can clean your grill over and over and use it forever! I have had my Weber Charcoal Grill for ten years! My job, a hospital, bought these grills and would only keep and use them for two years and for safety sake, would replace. I took one home and have had it ever since, like I said, ten years!! Love it and would never use any other kind… keep up the wonderful work Paula!
By Melinda Greene on June 04 2009
My husband and I bought a Weber grill when we were first married in 1993. Our friends made comments about our “fancy” grill and they do not spend that much on their grills. We are still using our same grill and love it. It does look a little rough but works great. I bet our friends have had to buy several lower priced grills over the years in which we have owned our one Weber grill.I would love to surprise him and be able to say I won a new grill.
By SHERRI ROGERS on June 05 2009
