I moved to Savannah last year, but I have yet to eat at The Lady & Sons. I can’t stand in that line because I’m disabled and walk with a cane. My limit for standing in line is about 15 minutes. I wish they would make an exception to their reservation policy for the disabled. Perhaps this is an issue that just never came to mind to Paula. I mean no disrespect to Paula, Jamie and Bobby.
I’m not the only disabled person I’ve heard that they had to cancel plans to eat there because of the line and the requirement that you must be at the restaurant at 9:30 AM to get your name on the list.
Yes, I could get someone to bring me in a wheelchair, but that defeats the purpose of being self-reliant, which is something that most disabled persons desire and work hard to accomplish.
The only times that you can make a telephone reservation is on holidays and if you have 10 or more people in your party. Why can’t a single disabled person make a telephone reservation? It wouldn’t be a bother to have to wait indoors in a chair for the next table, either.
Surely there are some sort of accomodations that can be provided for the disabled at The Lady & Sons regarding the reservation issue.
Hi midnight_lioness, although it does not help those who come to town, as a Savannah resident you can call and make reservations. I will bring your point up in our mgmt meeting tomorrow morning. It is something I know I had not thought about and it deserves our attention.
Midnight Goddess my niece went to Lady and Sons last month, she was in town on a buisness trip. She was alone and was told she had to sit at the bar. She really wanted to sit at a table, because she doesn’t drink alcohol and didn’t want to sit at the bar, but had no other choice. So I guess because of so many customers that is the rule if you are alone you sit at bar. That might be another thing to consider if you are in a wheelchair.
Good morning everyone, just got out of our Monday morning meeting. I brought this up and the response was extremely positive. Little did I know (since I am one of the few people who didn’t start out working in the restaurant) that the hostesses have a policy of taking reservations for folks in line with physical challenges before everyone else. I didn’t know this and I am very pleased to forward that policy on to y’all.

Thank you for looking into this for me. But I am a little confused. Does that mean that I still have to be there at 9:30 AM??? Or do I just hobble up to the hostess?? Since I live here, I call ahead???
Hi Midnight, yes, you can call ahead. For everyone else, yes they still have to come at 9:30 am, but those who are unable to stand in line will have their reservations taken first.

My husband and I are coming to Savannah for one day and would love to eat at Lady and Sons. The problem is that I cannot stand in line due to a permanent disability. Would it be possible to call ahead for a reservation? It would be a great help if I could do that. I know it would make my husband’s visit to Savannah much easier and more enjoyable if I am not complaining about my back the whole trip!

I don’t know if you can call ahead since you’re out of town, but if you and your husband are there at 9:30 am, it’s been explained that those with physical disabilities are given first chance at the list. But you know, it never hurts to ask, so maybe you could try to call the night before.
Good luck!! The reason I posted this topic was that I am also disabled and can’t stand in line either.
Phil, you think you might could bring this up again in Monday’s meeting? Maybe out-of-towners who are severely disabled could call ahead?? Just a thought. It’s not like someone is going to lie about it, at least I don’t think anyone would! A pox on someone who would fake a disability!
Thanks midnight. It would sure be nice to know if I could call ahead. Who would claim to be disabled just to get a reservation. That would be criminal and cruel. I hope Phil will bring it up n the Monday meeting. It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, Phil brought up the topic in their Monday meeting when I posted this and you’ve read what he posted back. You may still have to be at the restaurant at 9:30 AM and get on the Priority seating list. The hostesses give first slots to those who are disabled.
If you can walk, the Lady & Sons is part of City Market, which has all kinds of galleries, shops and cafes/restaurants. You can pace yourself and look around or grab a cup of coffee before your seating time. There are plenty of benches on the plaza, too.
Just a question. If your in Savannah on vacation why can’t you call and make a reservation? I am not disabled, but just wondered why it is different from other resturants? Why be at the resturant early in the morning and stand in line for a lunch or dinner reservation? It would still be first come first serve either way.

It’s the sheer demand of people coming in from out-of-town just to eat there that has made the Priority Seating policies necessary. The Lady & Sons is a HUGE tourist destination!!!! I’ve driven by and seen the line loop around the whole block and crossed over to the other side of the street. Paula’s celebrity brings people from all over the world!
There is a special tour of Savannah with Old Savannah Tours (I think that’s the tour company she authorizes) and the tour price includes your meal. That’s always an option for tourists as well.
The Priority Seating works like this: At 9:30 AM, a host/hostess comes outside the restaurant and starts taking names for lunch. When all the lunch spots are taken, you can take a dinner spot. Once all spots are taken, that’s it for the day.
Anyone with a party of 10 or more can call for a reservation as well. On certain holidays, you can call for a reservation for 10 or less. Locals, I’ve just learned, can call for reservations at any time.
The whole thing is to try and get the people in who want to eat there and be fair about it.
