While Paula and the gang have packed up and gone to Alaska and Senior Food Editor Libbie is having a fabulous vacation in Maine this week, I’m here in the Savannah heat reading everyone’s Facebook and Twitter, imagining that I was enjoying glacial views, lobster tail, and low humidity. Color me jealous.
But, the one thing that I’ve got to cool me off is Ice Cream Week here at PaulaDeen.com!
Listen. Ever since Paula and Libbie decided to feature ice cream on the website, my taste buds have been twitching quite uncontrollably. You see, my affinity for ice cream carries almost as much weight as my love for summertime, which makes sense because they often go hand-in-hand.
Where am I coming from, you might ask? Growing up in upstate New York, we didn’t go to the beach over summer vacation like we do in Savannah; we went to the lake.
Lucky for me, my best friends at the time owned a lake house where we would stay for weeks on end. Similar to most beach houses, their lake house was filled with tons of bunk beds and pullout sofas so that everyone had a comfortable place to stay. Though truth be told, I loved staying at the lake not because of the swimming, boating, fishing, or even hanging out with my friends, but because of the homemade ice cream.
While the kids were out water skiing, or in my case tubing at extremely conservative speeds, all of the grownups would stay back at the lake house and churn up some summertime goodness in one of those old timey ice cream machines. Each night was a surprise coming in for dinner as to which flavor we would have the privilege of sampling. Classic chocolate? Standby vanilla? Or maybe they would be adventurous with a little orange sherbet?
Without a doubt, mind you, each concoction was good enough to make you want to skip dinner and head straight to the freezer.
Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to replicate those homemade flavors. One time, though, I tried making my own ice cream with a sandwich baggie full of ice, a saltshaker, and a glass of milk. Needless to say, the only thing I got was a mess. Maybe there’s some sort of magic to be said about lake houses, summertime, and a good old-fashioned churn.
So, this week whether you’re at the lake, your beach house, or even the office, be sure that you check out Thomas Jefferson’s vanilla ice cream, Bobby’s guiltless milkshake, and all of the rest of the ice creamery going on at PaulaDeen.com! And remember, when water tubing, slow and steady wins the race, despite what the rest of your peers shout at you.
Better make it two scoops,
Jonathan

Would you recommend eating ice cream before or after water tubing? Or did you eat ice cream while riding on the water tube? It just seems like it would be messy. My Pawpaw has a lakehouse.
Bye!
