How to Make Chalkboard Herb Planters
The gals here at Paula’s Test Kitchen were looking for a fun way to jazz up the fresh herb plants in our container garden. We wanted them labeled but to also have a fun and fresh look. We finally decided on chalkboard herb pots and we couldn’t be happier with how they came out. Follow these easy step to make your own!
Pick out the pots you want to paint. There should holes in the bottom for proper drainage. We used basic and affordable terracotta pots and they worked great. Wash the empty pots and make sure they are clean and free of debris. Make sure to let them dry fully after washing.
Use a pencil to make an interestingly shaped outline of a label. Place the pot on newspaper and carefully fill in the stenciled area with the chalkboard paint. If you prefer, you can paint the whole pot. We liked how both turned out. Let dry for a few hours before filling.
Once dry, fill a quarter of the pot with gravel. This will help your plant drain properly. Fill the rest of the pot with soil, leaving just a few inches from the top. Place the roots of the herbs into the soil leaving a few inches between each stem. Pat down, and once in place, thoroughly water until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot. Place in a sunny spot and watch your plants grow!

What a cute idea! Can't wait to try this w/ my daughter. We tried herbs last year and they never grew. Any suggestions on what type/brand of seeds to use? Should we start the seeds now and transplant later or is it ok to start w/ seeds in these pots? Can't wait to paint the pots!!! Does the chalk wash off easy? Just wondering in case the pots get wet.

Love your flowerpot idea. I always plant herbs in containers, we live in a condo and I have 2 flowerbeds in front to plant in. I do mint, basil and rosemary. But this year since trees got cut in back off my deck i will put in more herbs and maybe some tomatoes and such in larger containers. So love your ideas, keep them coming. Have a super Mother;s Day sweet lady.I am a Gram-ma-ma also, I am 69 and have 6 granddaughters ages 14-4mos. and 3 grandsons ages 12-7 Hugs Rosie P.S. Love Bobbi's new show.

I love your herb pops. I am anxiously waiting to get mine ready, i always plant Rosemary and mint in large containers because i use them a lot. But now that a lot of trees got cut in our wooded area behind condo, I plan to set up an herb garden with some summer flowers and tomatoes and cukes. i wanted to say a big thanks for your vegitarian pizza with the young man who did the bunge jump with u in your back yard. He looks so much like my oldest grandson who is now 12, but i could so see Drew as i watched u and this young man. What a well-mannered and just delightful young man. Just wait those 3 precious grandsons of yours will take their [lace beside u as well. isn;t it great to teach our youngsters. i so heart being a grandmother. i am 69 and have 6 girls ranging from 14-down to 4mos. and 3 grandsons. ages 12-8. I have a daughter who is going to love that vegitarian pizza when she comes to visit in a few weeks with baby Blair. Thanks. Keep on doing what u do best Sweetie Rosie in Ct.

I LOVE THIS IDEA! FOR YEARS I HAVE GROWN MY OWN HERBS AND ALWAYS GETTING THEM MIXED UP! I HAVE NUMEROUS WAYS TO IDENTIFY THEM TO NO AVAIL! I AM GOING TODAY AND GET MY MATERIALS AND MAKE THEM RIGHT AWAY. I STARTED ALL MINE FROM SEEDS AND THEY ARE ALMOST READY TO POT. THANKS PAULA FOR THE GREAT TIP!

Susan Lott is a great party planner! She has tons of great ideas that she needs to share with the online world. I have been begging her to start a Facebook page or Etsy account. The graduation gift that she made me was hand drawn with my name and different definitions for each letter. She framed it and I cherish it.....I also would have paid about $50 for it in a store. Thanks for sharing her idea but this idea is nothing compared to some of her other quick and money saving tips! You should hire her for your creative team!
