Butterscotch Slice Cookies
Yield 8 dozen cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup butter, room temperature
2 eggs
2 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
3 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt

Directions:

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt.  Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl using a hand mixer, cream together butter, brown sugar and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time.  Add flour mixture one cup at a time and mix well.  Stir in chopped nuts.

Place dough on wax paper and form into 2-inch rolls.  Refrigerate overnight.

Preheat oven to 375º F. Slice into 1/8 inch slices and bake on an ungreased baking sheet for 5 to 6 minutes.

Allow to cool slightly before removing from baking sheet.

Notes from the Paula Deen Test Kitchen: Makes a great cookie to be served with tea or coffee.  Dough freezes well.  Dough is easier to cut when frozen.  If using this method, allow cookies to sit 3-4 minutes on a cool baking sheet before baking.

Why would you ruin these old fashioned butterscotch cookies with those horrible artificial butterscotch chips? My blessed grandmother made these back in the 1940's and they were my favorite. You have the right idea Paula.....natural is much better!

I can't believe people thought Paul could forget ANY ingredient! No butterscotch chips? Oh, well, I just thought the brown sugar and butter would take care of that! Keep on cookin', Paula, and we will keep on watching!

I love that the butterscotch flavor comes from the butter and brown sugar instead of those disgusting chips so many other recipes use. I wonder what the best nuts would be? I used walnuts because I had several pounds on hand but I think pecans might have been better.

Butterscotch is made of brown sugar and butter, which are the primary ingredients of these cookies. After the ingredients are mixed, the dough tastes just like butterscotch!

I want to know where the butterscotch flavor would come from, since you have no butterscotch morsels in it. Thanks

I expected them to have butterscotch chips but don't see that in the recipe. Also I have trouble getting sliced cookies to be round instead of oval. I wrap them in a towel to try to keep the round shape. Suggestions?

Lady Paula I enjoy your shows and the recipes /ideas you share with your viewers.I have a dream of preparing a mouth watering entree with you one day. My largest dream is to cook with you on the White House lawn- your invitation from the First Lady prior to her title. You prepared the most mouth watering shrimp and fries for her when she visited you on Paula's Party, I sure do miss that segment." Thank You" for mentoring me and expanding my passion for cooking and baking. May God continue to bless you and your family. P.S. Jack is a sweet heart. I have two sons also-they are the loves or my life. There is no scratch and sniff for TV ,keep on enhancing the kitchen all over America. A faithful viewer Brynda Hall

Dear Cindy, I have learned something new. It has been quite a while since I have been to a baby shower, and I am now prepared and up-to-date. I love the term "sprinkles" and it is nice to know that men are also invited to partake in the excitement! Thank you for a fun article!

Susan Lott is a great party planner! She has tons of great ideas that she needs to share with the online world. I have been begging her to start a Facebook page or Etsy account. The graduation gift that she made me was hand drawn with my name and different definitions for each letter. She framed it and I cherish it.....I also would have paid about $50 for it in a store. Thanks for sharing her idea but this idea is nothing compared to some of her other quick and money saving tips! You should hire her for your creative team! Love you Susu!
