Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House

By Paula Deen

There’s a little sayin’ that my baby brother Bubba and I are fond of: “Home is where you treat family like friends and friends like family.” In fact, we like it so much that we had it put up on the wall inside Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, the restaurant we started together.

You see, my family takes care of their own. Always have. Bubba was just sixteen when Momma passed away and Daddy had already been gone a few years. So I brought that tore-up little cherub-faced boy into my home to make sure that he was livin’ straight. He grew up into a fine man, started his own business in Albany and raised two beautiful children. But when things got rough, I brought him back under my wing, just where I like him.

In 2004, me and Bubba opened Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, and it is a perfect fit for my brother. He was practically born with a fishin’ pole in his hand. A ton of family photos decorate the walls of the restaurant and some of my favorites are the ones of Bubba fishing—especially the one of him holding his prize grouper that he caught right here in Savannah. (Though if you get the chance, check out the picture of Bubba and me in 1972 . . . when we were skinny!) Bubba and I share a good many qualities. We’re both hardworking and hard playin’. And we wanted the restaurant to reflect that. When you walk into Uncle Bubba’s, you feel right at home—especially if yours was filled with the sights and smells of Southern homecookin’ like Shrimp and Grits steaming and cornbread rising. We didn’t have to look too far for some of the best recipes to put on the menu: Aunt Peggy’s Fried Catfish will make you weep, Bubba’s famous Key Lime Pie is as smooth as butter, and my very own Fried Chicken will make you wanna slap yo’ mama, if I do say so myself. And the Char-Grilled Oysters and Fried Shrimp? Honey, don’t even get me started.

Besides the finger-lickin’ food, the location alone is worth the visit. Located between downtown Savannah and Tybee Island, the outside of the restaurant reminds me of one of the old oyster and shrimp houses from when I was growing up. But inside is like stepping into your grandmomma’s kitchen, from the warm welcome you get to the old fashioned chairs you plant yourself into. Even my grandbaby Jack feels at home. He loves staring into the koi pond out front or pretending to captain the little play boat out back. But me, I like relaxing on the back deck that looks out over the marsh, enjoying the breeze off the water and crackin’ crab legs to the beat of a live band.

It’s not always easy remembering to treat your family like friends—just ask Bubba and I’m sure he’d have a story or two to tell y’all. But at the end of the day, it’s all we have. Bubba and I have worked real hard at keeping our family close and we’re proud of what we’ve done together. So proud, that we want to invite y’all to come to Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House to be a part of it.

Dear Paula, In late October 2012, my husband, Tracy & I spent 3 days in Savannah, taking in all the history of that beautiful city we could get crambed into that short visit. Went on the "Paula Deen Tour", having my picture taken on the steps of your brick house( I looked real good standing there, only wish you would have opened the door when I knocked!!!) We ended our visit by going out to Tybee Island, and the amazing views of 'Hurricane Sandy' at the top of the Lighthouse were imprinted in our memories. We then stopped at Uncle Bubba's restaurant and yes we were greeted a Southern welcome!! A little gal working there took us on a brief tour. You see, we arrive before the restaurant was open for business. But we had pictures taken out in the backyard, bought a few gifts for family, and headed out to continue our vacation at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. We both felt like we had really missed out on something while in Savannah, and we wanted more the anything to have met you in person, Paula! (had my picture taken with my arm around the 'PAULA CARDBOARD' statue, tho!!!! We would love to take another trip to Savannah this year, but the money is going into remodeling my pre-historic kitchen!(will finally get a 'dishwasher' yea!!) Best to you all from us frozen Minnesotans! Linnea

Paula, Love, Love, Love, all of your magazines, and watch all of your foodnetwork shows.  Truly enjoy your cooking with your family. They are like mine.  Just awesome. (Have your cookbooks too!)

My daughters flew me to Savannah for my birthday 2 years ago.  We ate at the Lady and Sons.  Just delicious, and we also went to Uncle Bubba’s.  Equally delicious.  Can’t wait to go back for another trip.

Any chance of getting a signed copy of your latest cookbook? Also a signed copy of Jamie and Bobbie’s latest cookbook? Well be glad to pay for both at Uncle Bubba’s or The Lady and Sons. Must admit cookbooks are one of my passions.Seems everyone wants me to do the cooking for just about every Holiday or get together. Since I was raised in the South guess who"s cookbooks are ALWAYS used for menu. Thank You Jeanne

We have been to Savannah 7 times since you started on the Food Channel.  We met you and Michael on the street outside the Lady and Sons.  You were both so friendly and nice.  You posed for pictures with us.  You also said “I love your accent” and all the time I thought it was just like yours. haha.
Love the Lady and Sons (chicken and collard heaven) and Bubba’s shrimp and key lime pie are to die for!!!  The staff at both places are great.
I must have sent you both a boatload of customers.
Looking forward to being there in Nov.

Last Sept my husb and I went to Savannah, we had a fantastic time. You and Michael were out of town, we were disappoointed, took the tour and went to Bubba’s for lunch. First time I had grilled oysters, embarrased my husb by begging for more, absolutely good. Husb met and visited with Bubba (I was in bathroom)...argh. We wanted to come back this year, but I received a liver transplant last month and won’t be able. My surgery did not go smoothly as do most, I had many complications and a lllooonnnggg recovery ahead, but watching your shows and reading you on
internet cheers me up, please keepp the good stuff coming. My son, Ian Cross, lives 90 min aways from us in Rogers, Ark where you occasionally come he has seen you several times. You just remember next time you’re out here come on up to Springfield so I can take you to lunch.

What a lovely article about the two of you and the restaurant. My husband and I love visiting down your way and I hope we can come to Bubba’s someday! Appreciate that you include teachers along with the military in the restaurant’s weekly special, seeing that made me feel special. Thank you!

This was such a pleasure to read.  It made me feel like I was there sitting with Miss Paula and Bubba just listening to them talking.  It would be a dream come true to sometime be able to go and visit Uncle Bubba’s and Miss Paula’s Lady and Son’s restaurant.  I told my husband, that is my goal, to visit both restaurants and I am not getting any younger, so whenever the money is saved, we will be down.  Take care, and God Bless!

My husband and I were supposed to visit Uncle Bubba’s and the Lady and Sons for our 30th wedding anniversary, a gift from our best friends. Unfortunately, my breast cancer diagnosis ruined that. We had so looked forward to it. Maybe some day…
