Throwing Kid and Eco-Friendly Parties

By Martha Lee

Hosting a special party for a child without the price tag doesn’t have to be out of reach.  These days, children’s birthday parties seem to be more outrageous, expensive, and larger than ever as the years pass, yet we often forget, children are easy to please!  They like cake, but it doesn’t have to come from the fanciest baker in town. They enjoy games with their friends, but they won’t miss a bouncy house or the neighborhood clown busting out all his magic & balloons.  They just want to have fun!!  Well, I’ve found a great resource for parents that can help us create simple, cost-efficient, and naturally beautiful parties for our kids.  My friend, Anni Daulter, has a brand-new book out called Naturally Fun Parties for Kids that delivers great ideas for all sorts of cute, inexpensive celebrations for our little ones the whole year through.

In her book, Anni shows us how to create fun, memorable parties for our kids from items in our own homes or from our own backyards.  Has your child ever wanted an art party?  How ‘bout a spa-day for your little girl or a costume party for boys or girls?  These are just a few of the fun ideas coming from this book, and Anni helps to create everything you need from the very basics.  She shows us how to make sweet handmade invitations and décor and guides us through the activities and recipes. Everything is created from household goods sitting around your home or from thrift stores.

I love anything repurposed or upcycled, and Anni not only shows us how to use these old recycled bottles and cans, scrap pieces of fabrics and anything else layin’ around, but she manages to make them look lovely, sweet, and vintage (and purposeful too).  She has a way of taking run-of-the-mill items and making them new and beautiful again – and I am a sucker for anything with a homemade or vintage feel to it.  Take the striped banner for instance – it’s made from old shirts and skirts found at Goodwill or other local thrift stores. An old can of coffee beans?  With a little ribbon, it’s repurposed into a paintbrush holder or a vase for handpicked blossoms.  The ideas and gorgeous pictures in this book are boundless and will certainly help make your child’s next event beautiful and fun without the fussiness that can easily get wrapped up along with it.

Take a look at some of these ideas for an egg-dyeing spring garden party. Easter’s just around the corner, and this would be the perfect backdrop to an Easter Egg Hunt!

Egg-Dyeing Party:

• egg-shaped invites in cozy pocket pouches

• spring fabric banner made from recycled clothing

• natural egg-dyeing with fruits, veggies, and spices straight from your kitchen

• a timeline is provided for this party and all the others to help parents prepare ahead of time without feeling lost in the elements - such thoughtful and
helpful additions to a wonderfully made book!

Naturally Fun Parties for Kids by Anni Daulter is available for purchase! Publication date: March 21, 2012.
