There’s Always Something To Learn

By Libbie Summers, Food Editor

I have done more than my share of strawberry picking. When my son was in the eighth grade, I actually picked all the berries needed for a six foot strawberry mountain (I affectionately referred to as K2) that was served at a party after the graduation ceremony. To this day I have no idea why, in the South, graduating from eighth grade deserves a ceremony or a party after. When I told my engineer father about it he blurted out, “Damn right the boy better be graduating from eighth grade.” My thoughts exactly.

We are nearing the end of strawberry picking time here in Savannah, so I decided to snap a few stems for old eighth grade graduation time’s sake and headed to our local berry farm. While there, Mr. Tim, a wonderful man working the farm, taught me the proper way to pick a berry. I thought I had graduated from novice picker…according to Mr. Tim, I had not. Here’s what I learned:

A shallow flat container with a handle that will slide up your arm works best for strawberry picking.

Grasp the stem just above the berry between the forefinger and the thumbnail and pull with a slight twisting motion.

With the stem broken about one-half inch from the berry, allow it to roll into the palm of your hand.

Repeat this operation using both hands until each holds 2 or 3 berries.

Carefully place the berries into your container and repeat the process, making sure not to overfill your container. A single layer of berries is best.

Eat something homemade and never be afraid to learn something new,
Libbie
