The Littlest Fans Have the Biggest Hearts

By Paula Deen

Everyone has bad days—even upbeat, energetic people like myself. But I’m especially blessed with the support of all my fans when I need a little pick-me-up. People from all over the world have sent me notes saying how I’ve touched their lives. Some folks thank me for inspiring them to cook, some tease me for inspiring them to eat, and one woman even credited my Gooey Butter Cake for savin’ her marriage (God only knows). Every letter and email humbles me—how a southern girl from a small town in Georgia could influence anybody to do anything other than drop a heapin’ spoonful of sugar into their tea just blows my mind.

image

Course, nothing is more inspiring than the letters I get from my littlest fans—kids who enjoy cookin’ as much as I do. They are truly amazing. Take 5-year-old Danica, for example. That little darlin’ used Paula Deen’s My First Cookbook to make her momma and aunties a memorable birthday dinner of pigs in a blanket and cheese quesadillas!
image

Another 5-year-old, Carter, chooses the Food Network over cartoons! Before he knew my name, he told his momma that the “Finger Licker” was his favorite cook (guilty as charged). When Carter turned 3, instead of asking for toys, he wanted cooking utensils. His momma obliged and set him up with an apron, rolling pin, measuring cups and spoons, a chef’s outfit and his very own spatula. A man after my own heart.

image

But one of the most touching letters I’ve ever received was from a little boy named Seth. His momma told me that the first cake he ever baked was a coconut cake for his daddy on Father’s Day. But Seth came into cooking out of necessity. He was only 9 when his momma got real sick. To help out, he started cooking supper for the family—simple things like Sloppy Joe’s and spaghetti. He’d entertain his momma by standing on his little stool at the stove and talkin’ like me. Together they watched my cooking shows and picked out the recipes they’d make when his momma got better. By the grace of God, she did and they’ve been cookin’ together ever since.

Then I just received this treasure in the mail the other week. Little Molly drew this picture, sort of a self-portrait, of herself watching my show. It’s deeply touching to receive these letters. They warm my heart, and they remind me of the drawings that Jamie and Bobby use to make for me. There’s a place on every mother’s refrigerator for pictures like this.

image

So on those days when I wake up on the wrong side of the bed (albeit the right side of the dirt), I’m inspired by kids like Danica, Carter, Seth and Molly—their passion for cooking and their enthusiasm for life. Sure, they’re just getting started in both arenas, but in a lot of ways, they’re further along than most of us.

I’m so blessed to have a cheerleading section filled with kids like these that I just had to share their stories with y’all. And if you have a special little chef in your life, please share their story too. ‘Cause if I’ve learned anything in all my years, it’s that children don’t cook with just ingredients—they cook with their hearts. It’s a lesson we all could benefit from.

I love you Paula Deen. A lot has happened in my life the last few years, but when watching you on tv and on some shows you are on , like the view etc...well, it just makes my day brighter. I am a medically retired nurse, I worked for the state of Ms most of my nursing carrer, taking care of mentally challenged adults. These clients are like my 2nd family. Anyway, I had to quit work, so got into your cook books and cooking. I am still not real great, but I try. Anyway, we had to move out of the house Iwe have lived in and raised our children for 30 yrs. We moved 8 miles out of Hernando into Horn Lake into an apt. (Had to put mom in law in independent living retirement center, my mom hfound out she has cance in January..the list just goes on and on. I could get very down at times) Now that I am starting fresh with my husband (kinda like starting a marriage all over again)..I am doing my kitchen in "Paula Deen". It has been quite fun. I have magnets on my ref from your gift shop in Tunica, Ms; I have your cookbooks, your recipe card holder and cards, coupon book, 3 of your recipe books that you write in..etc. Thank you so much for giving me this idea. I also have magazines where you are on the front page and articles your have done in them....I am a true fan and just wanted you to know you have brought some sunshine into my life.Thank You Paula for making me smile again

My daughter Tori and I visited the lady and sons Resturant on Easter Sunday while we were vacationing on our spring break. We were seated at the bar area with no wait. The bar tender (Wes) was so very nice. When we talked about the Resturant he told me how wonderful your company was to all the employees and how he's met you on several occasions and what an honor it was to work for you. He said your sons are in the Resturant often and was very complimentary of how down to earth they were. I enjoyed our conversation and the atmosphere was so friendly and welcoming. Just thought I would share this with you grin

Dear Paula..I have been one of you biggest fans from day one and think you are an amazing woman...I love to cook more than anything, well except fishing..lol..I am a nurse and apparently we look a little alike and it tickles me when my patients like to tell family that Paula Deen is their nurse..it is an honor..I watched the show where Oprah and Gail came to visit..and cried thru half of it as I felt all that pain you had..you are an amazing woman to have come as far as you have come and I woud like to put some duct tape on the mouth of that certain person who feels the need to badmouth you in public..talk about insecurities!!! but as a devout fan, as I know you have millions..his words mean nothing to us..you just keep on keeping on Paula!!! and catch a few fish for me!!!

Hi Paula- I so respect and admire you. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on January 5, 2010. My blood sugar was an astounding 580 and my A1C was 13.8--and I lived to tell about it. Don't listen to the nay sayers....they are not worth your time. I just purchased your latest cookbook. I LOVE to cook AND just because I have diabetes doesn't mean I can't enjoy a good ole southern meal once in awhile. I wish you the best of luck with everything. And, just an FYI, I do not take ANY medicine or insulin for my Diabetes and my blood sugar is between 120-124 and my A1C is between 5.7 and 6.1 for the last 1 & 1/2 years. Knock 'em dead, Paula...

I too have one of your fans. When my daughter Emily was 5, she also used to watch your shows with me at our home in Maryland instead of cartoons after kindergarten. A few months later, we found out that we were moving to Atlanta, Ga for my husband's job. Emily was crushed to be leaving our home. When we told her that Paula Deen lived in GA and maybe we could see her there one day, it made her feel better. About 6 months after we moved to GA, Paula did a book signing near our home. We went so that Emily could meet Paula and Michael. She was only 6 but it was great. Now, Emily is nearly 11. We are finally going to Savannah and will be at the Lady and Sons to eat dinner. We can only hope to have a Deen spotting there too!!

I have been so disheartened with all the hoopla about Paula not revealing her diabetes to the world. I have been a type 2 diabetic for over 30 years. I cook and follow Paula's recipes all the time. Matter of fact, I have never missed one of her shows, ever. The difference is that I don't eat much of the over the top food that I prepare. My blood sugars stay in the good range 99% of the time. I have never volunteered my condition, unless someone asked. Health is a personal issue. I have never heard Paula say, "You have to eat this whole gooey butter cake." She is a human being, who happens to entertain us, inspire us, and make our day a little brighter. Those who have been judgmental, critical, and down-right mean, need to check the skeletons in their closets and get a life. Paula, I love you and all you do for the home cook. Keep on giving what you fans want, and with God's help, you will keep diabetes in check. I will keep on watching and enjoying your charm, as long as you keep offering it. We love you in Alabama.

I love you! I love cooking your recipes, eating your food, and learning to cook with a southern style that I didn't learn much as I was growing up. I can taste my grandmother's cooking in your recipes. As for your critics...well, Bless their poor hearts...they just don't know any better. grin

I have a question and have been trying to contact Paula Deen, I saw a Court Jester Cake a while back. I was so inspired by this cake that I took it and made a quilt out of it. I changed the hat, hands, and bottom. I was wondering if I can sell the pattern? Blog about it and give the pattern away free?

Dear Paula, My husband Michael is turning "50" on the 21st of this month. I am surprising him with a trip to the "Boston Red Sox Spring Training in Fort Myers, FL. We will be coming back home through Savannah and I was wondering if there is a shot in hell that he might be able to meet you? We watch your show all the time together...we buy your books and cook with your recipes and just enjoy your humor. He has said many times (pretty much every show) " I would love to go to dinner at Paula's house..." No worries, I'm not asking if we can come to dinner, just to meet you would be such an awesome gift that he'll never forget. We both love to cook, read cookbooks, watch cooking shows and in our travels pick up those "little church cookbooks" from different towns we've visited. "Food / cooking" is a huge part of our lives and our entertainment... sorry to blab... We will be passing through Savannah somewhere close to the 6th or 7th of March...We would be honored if you would be able to work us into your busy life. I look forward to your reply. May God Bless you and your family. Diane

Hi, Paula. My husband beat Type 2 Diabetes by eating low carb and ditching sugar. It's hard to figure out what to make for the family, but I'm doing it and making things differently so all of us can eat together. Anyway, my husband's doctor has declared him "Diabetes Free" and so I wish you all the best. It can be beaten and without drugs. Keep cookin' for us!

My dear Paula, I was just recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and share in your struggle to be healthy and happy. I have watched you for years and just adore you and your family! I am appalled that the media seems determined to vilify you for your lusty Southern cooking! My Mom always told me, "You don't have to eat it!" And she always said "If you don't like what you're watching on TV, just TURN THE CHANNEL!" Paula, dear, Southern Cooking isn't MEANT to be anything but rich, indulgent comfort food, anyone appreciative of good food knows that! So, grab that stick of butter, girl, and you just keep on cookin' what you do best! There are far too many shows on TV that spout the skinny! I want my Paul Deen just the way she is! God bless you lady! And thank you for being YOU!I hope someday you can come to Vermont so we can cook you up some of OUR full fat, turbo sugar, butter drippin' dishes! Love to you and yours!!!

I hope you aren't letting the media get you down. You're just their latest target. They always have to have someone to hate and belittle. Southerners are always an easy target for them. It's politically correct to bash us! But think about this: Aren't you glad you aren't them!!!! I am! God bless you and your family.

Southern girl to Southern girl, you hang in there! All of us know that there is a big difference between reality and what we like, what makes us happy and from all us Texas women you have been and continue to be a Blessing to all of us. You are my favorite when I need a pick me up. All I have to do is hear your voice on the TV and my day is brighter! Keep cookin with what we all know is straight from the creator, butter, eggs, and everything that makes it all taste good! Yes, everything in balance, it's called common sense. Have a great one!
