The Easter Dress

By Libbie Summers, Food Editor

One of the many great things I love about working with Paula is how we can go from sharing a recipe to sharing a memory in the time it takes to add a pinch of salt…or a tablespoon of butter. I call it “gooking,” gossiping while cooking. Two weeks ago when we were working on a cream cheese deviled egg recipe for The Real Women of Philadelphia, a little gooking was also going on and the eggs reminded me of an old Easter story I shared with Paula. She asked me to share it with you. It’s a story about an Easter dress…

You see, I’m the third child. The third daughter. If you are a third, you know that new things don’t come often to you. This particular Easter we were shopping for a new dress just for me…not a hand me down that Jesus had seen two Easter Sundays already. My Mom took me to a small boutique about 30 miles from our rural home. I don’t remember how many dresses I tried on, I only remember the one I fell in love with. A navy blue dotted swiss party dress. The fabric was so soft and had enough layers of crinolines that it made seeing my feet impossible. This special dress cried out for twirling. I never wanted to take it off…twirling my way through the boutique until my mom insisted I remove it so she could purchase it.

That night, as my new Easter dress hung in the closet, I remember hearing my Mom and Dad get in a huge argument…over my dress! Funny, because I never remembered my Mom getting upset when Dad bought me a new fishing pole or ball glove. So what was it with this particular dress that upset him so? As a four year old, I forgot about it as soon as I fell asleep and it wasn’t until many years later that my mom divulged that my beautiful Easter dress…the dress of my four year old dreams…had cost $50! Using a current inflation calculator, today’s price would be $317.74!

As a mother, I know why my Mom spent our family’s monthly food budget on one special Easter dress for her third daughter. As for my Dad…he still doesn’t get it.

Eat Something Homemade and have a very happy Easter,
Libbie

PS The picture above is me with my sisters on Easter Sunday ready for church and wearing THE Easter dress in question. Clearly there was no money left for a coat.

I was the mother of three little boys. Now don’t get me wrong. I love them to death although each time I got pregnant I wished for a little girl. Oh how I wanted to buy frilly little dresses , hats, gloves and black patent shoes. I never got to until my first grandchild was a girl. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when she was born. I thought nothing of paying $100.00 for her a frilly dress. She was one of the best dressed little girls in the county. When she grew up all of that changed. Now she says she will not wear those old Grandma looking clothes. She says that I kept her in so much lace that she never will again wear a single thing decorated with lace. I really don’t care. I had fun while it lasted.

This is so precious, I remember my mom going to our country grocery and letting me pick out the print I wanted my new skirt to be made of . My mom would buy a new white blouse and make my 4 yard gathered skirt. The material was Dan River, the best, and of course my sister and I always had the can cans to go with it. If we did not get new shoes we would shine the old ones with left over biscuits.  Precious Memories.

that’s a very sweet story. that reminds me of my 3 year old daughter. I also have a 5 month old son.  when me and my mother went through WAL-MART she wants everything she sees and by the time you leave you’ve probably spent 50 dollars! we took her shopping for her a Easter dress and she wanted all five that we had picked out, but we had to bribe her to get one, not all of them. kids are crazy, but on the other hand they make you realize what GOD has blessed you with everyday.

Thanks for sharing such a priceless story. It brought back so many memories of shopping for that perfect Easter outfit complete with spring coat, gloves and hat.  I really miss how many of these traditions/formalities have gone by the wayside today.  Happy Easter Paula and Libby, and your families!

I had four daughters and used to sew their dresses for Easter!!!  I love to look at the old pictures of them and remember sewing at the last minute to make sure that they were just “perfect” in my eyes!!!!  Now, they are all grown with families of their own, but my memories are the BEST!!!!!

I love this story.  Thanks Libbie for sharing it with us.  I remember my mom gave me and my 9 girl cousins permanents right before Easter.  We didn’t have hairdryers yet, and me being the last one, my hair was still wet so I couldn’t go to church.  But all my cousins looked so marvelous in their Toni permanents - all frizzy & looking like a fro!  Great memories.

Loved this story, reminders of so many Easters when we wore the dresses mom made and the hats were handed down. every easter meant white shoes could be worn and all the winter clothes were put up.
enjoy the story and love to read these from you.

Love. Another missing coat possibility might be that you really didn’t think a coat went with the look?
