Tangy and Sweet

“What are foods that go together?”

I’ve been consumed with strawberries and rhubarb this spring. Testing recipes with Paula for all sorts of rhubarb and strawberry recipes. Some fabufreakinlicious that you would find on this site and some not even licious that you would find down the test kitchen garbage disposal. All in all, I learned one very important lesson. A great rhubarb recipe doesn’t need strawberries to make it wonderful, but they don’t hurt! I encourage you to take a small bite of fresh rhubarb. Taste the earthy tang. Then cut the same size piece of a fresh strawberry and add it to another piece of rhubarb and taste them together…WAAAAAA (that’s the sound of angels singing). It’s amazing how complimentary these two spring foods are. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were dating.

Although we have been approached many times before, this is a FIRST. My good friend and Paula’s Design Director, Brandon Branch and I are doing a cooking and decorating demonstration next weekend (me cooking him decorating) for a fundraiser. Our theme –what else but strawberries and rhubarb!! We hope our 40 guests will enjoy the fun as we take this “Summer’s Branch” show on the road. If we are a complete failure, we’ve got three things still going for us: delicious food, stunning design and PAULA! She’s our ace in the whole and possible saving grace. Unbeknownst to our guests, Paula will be showing up for a guest appearance. Wish us luck!

Be inspired by spring’s bounty and eat something homemade,

Amazing coincidence! Not 5 minutes ago I told my husband that I bought him some rhubarb today at the Farmer's Market. Ever since we were married he has wanted me to make him a rhubarb crist. I've been intimidated about using rhubarb. He said "do you have a recipe for it?" "I'll find one in one of my cookbooks" I said. I was logging in on my computer while we were discussing the rhubarb and there was your recipe for strawberry rhubarb. Meant to be I guess. Thanks for the vibes Paula

Rhubarb has been part of our spring diets for years. My dad and I both have a huge rhubarb patch and after we've enjoyed eating the fresh rhubarb, I freeze dozens of bags of it to enjoy all winter long. I have many recipes, mostly desserts (rhubarb pie, rhubarb bread, rhubarb coffee cake, rhubarb pudding cake, rhubarb torte, stewed rhubarb), if anyone is interested. Please give rhubarb a try, it is wonderful.

Dear Ms.Summers: I was pleased to see your article with rhubarb.Growing up it was one of the first spring fruits we had to eat.My Grandpa always had to have Rhubarb Sauce at mealtime when in season.I still make it for myself. As a child, one of our special treats was a fresh rhubarb stalk dipped in sugar(diabetics beware here). The crunchy tartness was awesome. I have several Rhubarb recipes passed to me by my Grandmother that I still make. Some of them are:Strawberry Rhubarb Pie,Rhubarb Sauce,Strawberry Rhubarb Jam and a Strawberry Rhubarb Puff(sort of like a cobbler). If any interest in these recipes I would gladly share.

Never cooked much with a rubbarb. I love my green beans. I grow Blue Lakes, I like to snap the ends off, and mince about 4 or 5 clove of garlic. Wash beans, I don't measure much , but I pour in some extra virgin olive oil, a little bit of crushed red pepper and halve of the garlic that I've minced , Let it get to know each other, than throw in a colander of fresh green beans. Cook on med low heat , stir, Don't burn anything. I say 15 to 20 min. I like crunchy beans.Oh yea salt Pepper if you're in the habit. these are better than potatoe chips. I've been growin beans since I became disabled. I gotta eat good. I grow other things too.

My dad's all-time favorite pie is strawberry-rhubarb. Can't look at a rhubarb plant without thinking of how he would ask my mom, "Aren't you gonna make me one of those pies?" (which she did--every week). And anything that makes me think of my dad is a good thing.

I live in western Alabama. No rhubarb here. I miss it so this time of year. I am originally from Nebraska where rhubarb grows abundantly. I miss those wonderful pies my mother used to make or just the sauce thickened with tapioca. And the cakes you make with rhubarb. I can taste it right now!!! Yumm.

Not sure about Rhubarb, never really had it. My Mother, she loved it however she had some stubborn kids that wouldn't try it. Not sure where those kids are now...lol. Your salsa has me interested enough to try it though. I love salsa and this sounds great. Took the chicken out of the freezer today...going to the store later. Thanks, Libbie!!

My mother use to make Strawberry Rhubarb Pie when I was younger. My father grew the fruits in his garden. I miss them both but I have great memories of them. I wish that I had the recipe but my mother made it from scratch. I love your show; Paula with your sons, Michael, etc. Warm Regards,

They must indeed be dating to be so sweet! My daughter turned me onto rhubarb and strawberries and in fact, we were recently invited to bake them in pies for a local throwdown - come visit us if you like: http://cafeblueridge.blogspot.com/2011/05/strawberry-rhubarb-pie-throwdown.html As I learned that day, however, just be sure whoever is mowing your lawn recognizes the plants!

Just happened to catch the word "Rhubarb" on the mornings posting from Paula and immediately clicked on it - my Dad just passed on March 11 of this year and the week before my husband and I were visiting him and told him of turkey season coming in soon and how the rhubarb would be starting to come up and you know what that all means...Spring...and he looked at me and smiled and opened his eyes and said, "...that is wonderful." My Dad grew the best patch of rhubarb with leaves so huge! That first pie of the season is the most awesome! I had never cared for rhubarb and wondered how they could eat such a pie...I loved to bake them but not eat them. One year after I had a couple pies cooling...I thought to myself, that looks sooooooo good...I just have to try it again...well, after that one bite, I was hooked and couldn't believe that I had missed out all those years on something soooooo delish! I have my mother-in-law's recipe for rhubarb pie and it is a family favorite...cooked rhubarb, of course, is always an easy staple. I have an uncle and my grandson who adores rhubarb pie with some golden raisins thrown in and lastly, the rhubarb marmalade...which does have strawberry jello included...everybody is waiting on a jar of that at the moment. We just picked some of Dad's rhubarb and I'm going to make pies and marmalade...I posted pics of it and my granddaughter looking for the pie and marmalade recipes...I cannot think of rhubarb without thinking of my Dad and the many times he would pick bunches and bring down to me and how proud he was of it...and the oohs and aahs of the first pie of the season...happy memories. Loved reading your blog...
