Some folks think all we grow in Georgia are peaches, but I can assure you it’s not. Up in north Georgia, just over an hour’s drive from Atlanta and across the Coosawatte River sits beautiful Ellijay, Georgia. Historic Ellijay is known for many things: beautiful mountains, fishin’ holes and fresh apples! I can’t wait each year to bite into a Honey Crisp or Pink Lady from the many family-owned orchards around Ellijay. For baking, I don’t know if there’s anything better than a mix of Ellijay grown Granny Smith and Winesap. Michael and I make a day trip out of getting our fall apples. We drive up to Ellijay and bring back a carload full of apples, pumpkins, mums and Indian corn to decorate our porch. Michael gets a little “agitated” with me ‘cause I make him stop at all the junkin’ spots along the way!
To celebrate this fall’s Georgia apple crop, I asked some of my girlfriends over for a last minute lunch out on my back porch. Heck, we’re always looking for some reason to eat an Apple Raisin Muffin and gossip a little! What better way to decorate the table than with apples? I hope it gives you some inspiration to celebrate the crops of your state and have some giggles with your girlfriends!
