Savannah Style: Apple Inspiration

By Paula Deen

Some folks think all we grow in Georgia are peaches, but I can assure you it’s not. Up in north Georgia, just over an hour’s drive from Atlanta and across the Coosawatte River sits beautiful Ellijay, Georgia. Historic Ellijay is known for many things: beautiful mountains, fishin’ holes and fresh apples! I can’t wait each year to bite into a Honey Crisp or Pink Lady from the many family-owned orchards around Ellijay. For baking, I don’t know if there’s anything better than a mix of Ellijay grown Granny Smith and Winesap. Michael and I make a day trip out of getting our fall apples. We drive up to Ellijay and bring back a carload full of apples, pumpkins, mums and Indian corn to decorate our porch. Michael gets a little “agitated” with me ‘cause I make him stop at all the junkin’ spots along the way!

To celebrate this fall’s Georgia apple crop, I asked some of my girlfriends over for a last minute lunch out on my back porch. Heck, we’re always looking for some reason to eat an Apple Raisin Muffin and gossip a little! What better way to decorate the table than with apples? I hope it gives you some inspiration to celebrate the crops of your state and have some giggles with your girlfriends!

imageCenterpiece: I used wooden berry baskets filled with Red Delicious apples and greenery picked from my yard. I laid a length of burlap down the center of the table and placed the baskets down the middle.

imageTake Away Tip: I love this tip. I just put a little slice in the side of the apple and put the name card inside. Perfect and simple! The apples look so pretty against the Wedgwood Georgia Historical plates.
imageFood: Instead of putting out rolls, I put out mini Apple Raisin Muffins for my guests. I pulled some leaves from my garden, topped them with a piece of brown parchment and piled on the mini muffins!

I visited Ellijay several years ago and fell in love with it. My Great Great Grandfather I buried there. I'd love to spend some time in that area. The Apple season was over when I was there so I didn't get to sample them.

How ya doing Mrs Deen: My name is Ronald Coleman from Palatka Florida, 35 miles west of St Augustine Florida. My wife is a native from Savannah, Georgia, she was born there in 1953, and lived there until her late teenager years, before moving to Florida. We both are big fans of yours, we have been to the Lady and Sons and enjoyed the food your restaurant served. We make several trips to Savannah each year. My Question to you is: What Apple orchard in Ellijay Georgia do you buy your apples or the name of other farms there that will ship to Florida? Their is nothing better than a good raised mountain apple. Thanks for the information.  Ron& Jeannie Coleman

Paula, the table is beautiful, did you or Brandon do it?  I love the reuse of all the different items.  I too like to take day trips to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables fresh from the farms.  Makes me remember my family’s farms growing up.
