Pumpkin Carving Pointers and Patterns

Fall is officially here and with it’s cool crisp air come Jack O’ Lanterns! Carve up some of the Halloween’s spirit into your day with some pumpkin carving tips from Paula’s Test Kitchen.

imageStep 1: First pick out a fresh pumpkin for carving. Give it a knock to make sure it’s not rotten on the inside and check the stem for browning or dryness. Next gather your tools. We recommend the following: T pins, a small-serrated knife, serrated carving tool, tape, scissors, and an ice cream scoop. And most importantly, don’t forget to print out a PaulaDeen.com exclusive pumpkin-carving template!

imageStep 2: Use the serrated knife held at a slight angle to carefully cut a whole in the top of the pumpkin.

imageStep 3: Use the ice cream scoop to remove the seeds and pulp from the pumpkin. Rinse off the seeds to prep for this delicious recipe.

imageStep 4: Print and cut out the pumpkin carving template and tape to the front of your pumpkin. Use the T pin to trace the design by poking holes into the flesh of the pumpkin.

imageStep 5: Remove the paper and use a small -serrated carving tool to carve out the design.

imageStep 6: Boo Y’all!

**If you don’t have all these materials at home you can buy inexpensive carving kits at almost any craft store or pharmacy.

Paula the wonderful thing about pumpkins is they are year around. We don;t just have them for Halloween or Autumn or thanksgiving or christmas. I think of the many pumpkins my 4 painted and carved and sat out on the porch or in the yard. The pumpkin roll a friend use to make and send to the college guys from our church. Noticed one among your receipes. Eating roasted Pumpkin seeds, oh my such memories- even now that my 4 are grown with families of their own. the joy u and Mike have with those grandsons. One thing i trully love about your show and your sons is the way u embrace tradition and the things we enjoyed in our youth and continue to pass on thru the years. I thing that is why no matter what anyone says about you, I think of all the Foodnetwork cooking shows, yours is the onlu=y one i know of that loves to share your Mother and Grandmother and aunts love down to us. I so enjoy watching u and Bubba when u cook and tears come to my eyes, because I can almost see my own relatives and I get such a warm welcome just sitting in my home watching you. You really make your fans feel like we just knocked on ypur door and you said come on in U ARE SO WELCOME.. I get so dad blame furious when someone says u are fake, lord how the hell do u fake a true southern accent. I am from the Ozarks and mine(accent is true blue. I have been here in Ct. was 12 years this past Sept. and my southern ways and talk are very intack. Happy halloween and Autumn to you and your wonderful family. Ya:all come back and best dishes from our kitchen to yours. Love Rosie
