Paula’s Fruit Trees

By Brandon Branch

The gardens at Paula’s are in full bloom, which means all the fruit trees are loaded down with fruit.

On the property we have kumquats, loquats, 14 varieties of bananas, olive trees, blueberries, peaches, pears, apples, lemons, limes, grapefruit, oranges and plums. That’s a whole lot of fruit, y’all!

The bananas bloomed in January with giant purple blooms. The pear tree is in full bloom now and is stunning.  The new peach tree is loaded with baby peaches.  The loquats limbs are bending to the ground with so much fruit.  The kumquats still have plenty of fruit left over from winter, and the citrus trees are loaded with blooms, which means we will have a bumper crop this year.

The smell in the citrus garden is intoxicating.  The olive trees are just now showing olives, and the plum trees are producing too. I hope you enjoy my collection of pictures from the property I took this morning.

This banana tree is one of our favorites. It looks so stately as its branches spread and reach for the sky.

The kumquats add a nice pop of citrus color to Paula’s property – and they’re delicious too!

You won’t believe how amazing these lemon tree blooms smell as you walk by.

image
Is there anything more perfect than these olive trees overlooking the water in Paula’s backyard? We don’t think so!

The peach trees on Paula’s property are simply adorable, and they produce the sweetest fruit.

I can’t get over how stunning the blossoms of Paula’s pear tree look against the bright blue sky.

Hi Paula, I know you are going through some nasty times now but you have overcome other bad times and have come out better. Many of us feel your pain and want to support you. All of us have made mistakes in our lifetime and may regret what we have done but we go on and my hope is that you will be stronger and better for it. Best regards a fellow chef. Maria

I noticed you have an olive tree and I was curious if it affected the taste? I know that olives taste different from different countries due to the soil, so I'm thinking that yours will also be different than what is bought over the counter. Do you use the olives from your trees only in special recipes because of the taste? And Paula, you are a beautiful Southern Lady smile

Hello, Paula: I love your orchard. I retired, moved to the deep south, and planted a citrus orchard much as you have. I started with red grapefruit, pink grapefruit, then white. Next came a hamlin orange, satsumas, kumquats, limequats (key limes), pink lemons and mayer lemons. After that, along came an African golden banana and another sweet little banana whose name I can't remember. I don't know why, but growing fruit trees offers a sense of warmth and renewal each and every year. Keep growing your fruit and keep smiling that beautiful smile. You owe no apologies. We are just people...and none of us are perfect....and, keep doing what you do best. Cook, girl! Keep cooking the best food on earth! Love you. Claudine
