Late Summer at Paula Deen’s

By Brandon Branch

So its late in the Summer at Paula’s house and I took a walk around the property this morning to see how things are growing.  First stop the catfish pond, which Oprah made famous when she went fishing there with Paula.  Early in May I went a bought Lotus and Water Hyacinth for the pond.  They have exploded in the pond and the fish have loved hiding under and feeding on them.  We also go a surprise from my purchase.  Some of the plants had koi fish eggs attached to them.  They hatched and we have six eight inch koi living in the pond now.  The other fish don’t seem to mind them.  I was also at battle with the ducks early spring because they were eating my plants in the pond but the plants are now growing faster than the ducks can eat.  I did have to take out the water lilies because they almost ate them to death. I place them in the Koi pond and they have made a come back.  I think the pond just looks stunning and all the animals seem to be happy!

Aunt Peggy’s cottage just got 2 new planters for Fall.  It’s a great pop of color on her porch and she will be thrilled on her next visit to see them.

Walking thru the Citrus garden all the trees are loaded with fruit.  We have Myer Lemons, Lime, Kumquats, Satsuma’s, and Grapefruit.  The limes make the best Gin and Tonics I must say! Paula makes a killer sugarfree lemonade with the lemons every year!! We also have tons of pears and figs in that garden.

The Herb garden is out of control! We have enough basil for all of Savannah. The smell is amazing when you walk by. I think we have six different types of basil growing in the garden.  My friend Nancy McCarley has been making me amazing pesto with some of the basil.  I love it on my sandwiches for lunch or on crackers with a glass of wine.

We got two new members of the family this week too. Meet the Golden Girls, two new golden chickens. These hens have really hit the jackpot at Paula’s hen house!! They have settled in just fine.

I also have to say thanks to Live Oak Orchids of Savannah Paula has the prettiest orchids in the state!! The smell of these is just killer.  Paula and I both adore orchids and keep our homes full of them.

So late summer at Paula Deen’s is not a bad place to be to me! Every morning I spend at least 20 minutes walking the grounds and enjoying all the beauty.  So take a little time to stop and smell the roses before winter hits.

Paula, your landscaping is stunning! I think that I could nap all day there by the pond. So serene. I could sure use that peacefulness. The chicken's sure bring back memories too. We had chickens and mine was named short-comb! How original huh? I was 4 what can I say. When I was a small girl we had a big old farmhouse with a barn in Rockland, Massachusetts, before it was all built up. We had 100 blueberry bushes, all kind's of fruit tree's and vegetables. I have very fond memories of my Grandma Mik ( She was Finnish; Mikkola)sitting in that barn peeling peaches, apples and pears and all of the honey bees buzzing around. We even had bee's which we had to have a man come in to "smoke" them so that we could get the honey. Wonderful, delicious memories.I love how you share your memories and it brings me right back to my time's. I love your cookin'!I have been a Paula fan for years, even before you had your own show. You use to go to people's house's and make meals out of what they had in their refrig. and freezer's!I forget the name, but, Gorden Elliott sponsered it. Everything looks wonderful. I think that I am going to make the lime blueberry tiramisu, only I am goig to use Key lime .... YUM!!! I would love to meet you someday!P.S. I am a butter freak too! LOL! Warm regards, Karen

Paula I just love the beautiful views that you have at your home. I love the peacefulness and especially your chickens. You having chickens brings back lots of memories for me. My beloved and deceased grandmother had chickens and was an avid gardener of vegetables, fruits and she especially loved her flowers. On days when I feel depressed, I will look and your beautiful views and know that my granny (Dora) is looking down on me from heaven. Thanks for your love of "good ole" southern cooking and sharing fond memories of your Aunt Peggy and other family memories. I would love to have the oppurtunity of meeting you and your sons one day. Again with sincere thanks, Sherrie Morris

Love all her shows and the ones she guest on. I use a lot of her recipes have for years. I would change the sugar to splends or splenda blend to cut back on sugar long before I heard she was a diabetic. Most of my family have dealt with this so I have tired lot of sweetners in the recipes. Splenda was a God send for us when it comes to baking. Keep the recipes coming. Still can't get Not my Mom's Cooking but do get Home for Dinner it's great. God's Blessings from our House to Yours
