Heading in the Right Direction

By Paula Deen

How come I’m always trying to “get” into shape but I never seem to arrive at my destination? Like most women I know, I’ve tried all sorts of crazy diets and fads over the years, even ones involving legwarmers and a trampoline. Those efforts never really paid off—probably because I lost interest well before the cool down. I know I need to make some changes in my lifestyle, but I also know that this time it’s got to stick like glue. So instead of going hog wild, I’ve decided to embrace the process of “getting there”—one little step at a time.

I’ve been trying to take small steps every day. I’ve been eatin’ more fruits and veggies, and I’ve cut down on fried foods and given up Sweet Tea, which means pigs must be flyin’ somewhere! I even started using my treadmill.

Now that the weather’s improved, I’m enjoying morning strolls outside. I say “hello” to the ducks on the pond and the hens in the chicken coop, and they look at me like I have three heads—guess they aren’t used to my new routine just yet. But the best is when I have someone to chat with so I can get my mind off the walking. I especially love when my dear friend Donna joins me. We end up gossiping like schoolgirls and before we know it, we’ve been moving our feet and running our mouths for 30 minutes!

Recently, I started following up my walk with a delicious breakfast smoothie, which tastes even better after you earn it. Recently, I was introduced to by a dear friend what I now call my Good Morning Green Smoothie. Now, don’t let the color fool you—it’s not like gnawin’ on grass or anything. It’s sweet, refreshing, and surprisingly filling. Donna was a little skeptical at first, but she came around after she saw me suck mine back. I just love, love, love that smoothie!

I was surprised to see these little steps add up. I’m even able to fit into a pair of “wishful” jeans that I’ve been holding onto for years (ladies, y’all know what I’m talkin’ about). Of course, that makes me feel real good about myself, but the best is when someone says to me, “I can tell you’re taking better care of yourself.”

I may not be “there” just yet, but at least I’m gettin’ somewhere.

Good Morning Paula, Do you want an old recipe from my great grandmother Falwell for her potatoes? They are fattening, but it isn't something you would eat everyday, just on a special occassion. Thanks and so proud of you! You and Michael are just adorable! Joanne

I have one of your older cook books and use it so often, I should really buy another one. I am so proud of your accomplishments and I can't wait to share this with a friend of mine who always gets all fired up, drops 5 pounds and two weeks later gains 7. She might see how your approach is working for you. She has heart issues and the doctor has ordered her to lose at least 40#'s. I myself will try harder after see the example you are setting for all of us. I am 66 3/4 years old and got married a few months ago - cooking for two is fun and unfortunately I love to eat. I just eat too much too often. Thank you again for your inspiring message. Ruthann Stafford-Couto

Paula, you are a true inspiration! I too have been battling the bulge for ever! I'm between a rock and a hard place! Overweight and unable to exercise because of a bad knee that needs replacement. I need some encouragement, because this is taking me twice as long to lose! You are so wonderful and I try to read everything about your success because it lifts me up and I am able to carry-on! Thank you and God Bless you!

Love your show. My husband just started Victoza. He has diabetes AND CELIAC. I have been looking for low carb and gluten free recipes. Especially I am looking for a pasta I could make. the gluten frees are rice or corn and way too many carbs. Any info you could give will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm so happy for you! I know it's a tough journey because I'm still at the start and stop stage...I'm trying to the step by step, little by little mentality. But I had to tell you that I had a laugh out loud moment when I got to the end of your post to find that the recommended recipes at the bottom of the article were not 'healthy' recipes at all but rather recipes that involve: cheese, frying, chocolate and making nutty brittle! LOL It gave me a good chuckle, just like you do on your show each day. Keep it up, I want you around for a long, long time! Take care.

Love you Paula! My sisters and I (there are six of us) will be visiting Savannah in a couple of weeks. We would love to meet you. Is that at all possible? We range in ages from 54 to 66 and we take a "sisters' trip" every year. This year it is Savannah! Hope to see you while we are there.

Paula, I am so very proud of you, taking care of your body & being such a good example to so many of us. Like you, I am a southern girl & love to cook like my grandma taught me & it's hard to change my way of cooking, but with your help, I'm doing just that. I was at your reasturant a few years ago & I was was in food heaven. I then we to Uncle Bubba's and met your husband, your 2 beautiful sons, Jamie's wife and your step daughter. Let me tell you, they were so very sweet, just like going home to be with family. I'll treasure my visit always, the only thing missing was I didn't get to meet you, but I get to see you an tv, anytime you are on. Thanks again Betty Wassom
