Fun on the Paula Deen Cruise (Paula Deen Cruise 2011)

By Paula Deen

I am home sweet home, but boy do I already miss the open seas! I had the most fabulous time on our cruise last month, and I wanted to share with y’all some of the fun we had. This was my third annual Paula Deen Cruise, and let me tell you- they just keep getting bigger and better. Every year, I get so tickled meeting so many different and interesting people, and the best part is that I get to spend an entire week getting to know them. And what a better way to escape the cold and dreary month of January than to hop on a ship and sail the Caribbean!

My family and my new friends set sail on the awesome Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship by Holland America. The talented staff at Alice Travels put together such an amazing week of fun and festivities. One of my favorite events was the Deen Family Olympics. Y’all, just because I might be old enough to be your grandmother doesn’t mean this girl is too old to let her hair down and get in the middle of a competition with the rest of them! It was such a hoot. My family and the rest of the guests on the cruise competed in a handful of just-for-fun events like an egg race. I got so worked up trying to carry that egg in a spoon across the finish line that I nearly just grabbed it in my hand and sprinted!

Michael, my son Bobby, and my sweet brother Bubba all had their own excursions like hosting a BBQ and exploring some of the local sites on the islands. Those boys had a blast meeting y’all and I know they can’t wait to do it all again next year. The glam squad, Jamie Cribbs and Courtney Fix, hosted some Makeovers, and let me tell you, those ladies looked even more beautiful than they already were when Jamie and Courtney worked their magic on them!

Here are some of my favorite moments from our week at sea.

imageHere’s the glam squad striking a pose with two of their makeovers. Don’t they look fabulous!
imageY’all I had so much fun at the cooking demo. Look how delicious this is.
imageI’m so glad that I got to spend quality time with my family on the ship as well. Here I am visiting with my Aunt Peggy.
imageHere we are at the newlyweds game. It was hysterical this year!
imageOne of my favorite parts of the cruise was the food. Y’all, this year the food was absolutely spectacular.
imageHere are some of my favorite girls and one of my right-hand men, Hollis, at the farewell party.
imageThe best thing about the cruise had to be getting to meet all of the wonderful people that decided to come sailing with me. I hope you all just as much as I did!

Hey Paula! I am from the coast (Townsend, GA right down from you)and have dined at The Lady and Sons many times over the years before you became famous...... I am in awe of you. Both of my aunts owned resteraunts, (diner's) and it has always been my dream to own my own place. I know I am a "nobaody" but I can cook like nobody's business. I am outgoing like you and LOVE to cook. I now live in Loganville, (WHERE'S LOGANVILLE?!?!?") I cook a lot of your recipes, like my favorite, The Lady's Cheesy Mac....Just wanted you to know I would so appreciate the opportunity to meet you AND cook with you!! I have never heard of your cruise and I can assure you I will be working towards going out with you soon. You are my INSPIRATION!!!

Dear Cruise Buddies, Bob and I spent this morning with Paula, Michael and Bobby as they joined Al Roker of the Today Show to honor a very special charity here in Birmingham. Our city and our state will never be the same after the wrath of April 27th. But as you would expect OUR friend Paula and her wonderful friends at Smithfield rose to the challenge. I guess I will have to buy some bigger T-shirts on our next cruise because my heart is SOOOO full. Lets all plan to reuinte on this next cruise and give them a GREAT BIG HUG. God love her ..she never misses a beat and she gave Andrea (the Coummunity Center Director) a HUGE HUG and something to dry the tears. I have never been prouder (and Bob as well) to say that Paula is our friend! What a blessing. Hope to see ya'll in January 2012. Feel free to contact us at puntmom@aol.com. Talking with ya'll will keep us busy till January! Bunnie (and Bob too)

Dear Cruise Buddies, This past week has been one that has forever changed my life. The people of Alabama have suffered a great loss individually and collectively. Those of us who had to pleasure to cruise with Paula and her family, under the helm of Alice Travel, have become somewhat of a family. On behalf of my neighbors, the ones I know by name and the ones I have yet to meet, I respectfully request that you make a donation to the United Way of Alabama to help with the relief efforts. Today 5/4/11 was the first day of my retirement from my operating room nurse career and I have busier than I thought I could be working on behalf of the relief efforts. Thank You in advance, Bunnie Tatarek

Hi, It is a moot point but I have an amazing dessert recipe that is not eliglble for the contest because it take more than 1 hour to prepare. I have made this recipie for over 30 years and it has 3 layers to it. The bottom layer is a baked meringue, the middle layer is a combo of cream cheese and other ingredients with the top layer being fresh berries and another ingredient. I am a police officer's wife and have had cops fighting over the remains of the pan with spoons at the end of a party scraping the pan.I would love to share this recipie with Philadelphia folks but it just doesn't fit into the contest, unfortunately, due to preparation time. duchessdiana777@yahoo.com Diana

Hi Paula! I just finished watching you on the Rachael Ray show and was inspired to write to say hello and ask for a few words of advice. I was employed by the Altoona Post Office for twenty-five years, the last fifteen as a 'mail lady' and left in March 2007 due to the onset of anxiety and subsequent agoraphobia. Through the generous help of my therapists and medical doctors, I am on the road to recovery. I have raised four children on my own, ages 32,27, 20 and 18. Since my younger two have left the nest, I feel that I am ready for a change and have decided to move to California where my two older children live. I have discovered that, although my "plan" sounds wonderful, I am still struggling with a fair amount of indecision and fear. The story of your earlier life has inspired me and I am hopeful, that like you, I will be able to start this new chapter of my life. I would appreciate any advice that you could give me that will help me overcome the 'should I, would I, can I' hurdle that I am presently experiencing. Thanks so much for your time and God bless you and your family! Maureen

Mrs. Paula, I was raised in North Augusta, SC and I was very interested in joining you on your cruise, that you mentioned on Rachael Ray. My mother didn't cook when I was growing up so 10 years ago, I found myself in the kitchen with cook books and hungry children and and a hungry husband. I have kept up learning to cook and some of the dishes aren't too bad. But, it would be a dream come true to meet you. You cooked for your family and every dish was made with love. There really isn't many people out there that just enjoy cooking and keeping our family's happy. I'm not a special case, just a stay at home mom that enjoys my job cooking and cleaning and taking of care of our family. I have different shows on the TV as "white noise" all day. You and Rachael Ray I actually watch and enjoy. Well, I'd love to hear from you. Maybe you could even give me some tips on my kitchen. I have RA and a back condition and refuse to stop cooking, walking or not. I love your personality and your recipes and thank you for your time. Have a great day.

I think I must be obsessed with recipes, having a collection of about 500 cookbooks. It's hard for me to simply pass up a recipe in the newspaper, or a magazine, and I just keep adding them to my collection. (One of these days, I'm gonna learn how to cook!) Started my collection when I married in '55, with Good Housekeeping Cookbook from my Mother. I read them like novels, then away they go to the bookcase. There are about 12 that I use frequently, but I'm just gonna hafta get one of yours to make my collection complete! Until then, tho, I keep referring to your websites on the 'puter for exciting new recipes. Keep 'em coming!!!! Thanks!

Just curious when your cruises will be the next couple years. My future bride is HUGE fan, actually HUGE is an under statement. Anyways, our wedding is 9-10-11 and I would like to take her on a cruise for our honeymoon. We have spent our entire relationship apart since I am in the Marine Corps. I know she is going to be absolutely happy when I return home but I also know she would be absolutely thrilled to meet you, Paula Deen. Anyways just curious if its possible to go on a cruise with you. Thanks for your time.
