An Easter Egg-spiration

By Paula Deen

Every Easter I try to come up with a new “look” for my eggs just to make things interesting—and considering how many years I’ve been doing eggs, you can imagine this is quite a challenge.  I’ve done bright colors, rainbow colors, hand-painted designs and one year I was so busy that I skipped the dyeing altogether and just put coins inside plastic eggs! The kids liked it, but I can’t say it felt right.

image

For this Easter’s egg inspiration I turned to the hens and ducks in my own backyard.  My feathered friends lay the most beautiful eggs.  They are light brown and dappled with darker browns, and the ducks’ eggs, which are a bit larger, can have the prettiest blue tinge to ‘em.  Both versions are so unlike the bright white ones you find in the grocery and I think they’re more naturally beautiful because of it.  So I decided to try my hand at dyeing eggs in soft pastels and then speckling them with a toothbrush lightly dipped in brown paint.

image

About halfway through the first batch of eggs, in walks Jamie’s wife with my grandson, Matthew.  He got so exited when he saw me painting the eggs and of course he wanted to help his “Guinny” out.  Eggs are little fragile for a year-and-a-half year-old boy, but he had so much fun y’all.  He loved the rainbow of colors in the jam jars and thought it was just magic when we dipped the eggs in and they turned pretty blues, pinks and yellows.  He wasn’t too much able to do the speckling—he was a bit heavy handed with the paint—but I wasn’t much better, so I reserved judgment; his eggs will just be a little harder to find in the garden than the others!

image

Most important, Matthew’s impromptu visit reminded me that Easter is such a special time for kids—and just about the only time they’ll get excited about a silly ol’ egg.  It’s not about presents or even the chocolate bunnies so much; we honor the holiday together as a family through these wonderful traditions.

image

When Easter Sunday comes around, I’ll again attend a beautiful sunrise service on Tybee and then join the family for a big egg hunt at the house.  We’ll enjoy a traditional brunch together, probably with a delicious spiral ham and a spread of my favorite dishes, and I’ll look down the table at my ever-growing family—my five beautiful grandsons—and appreciate how blessed the Good Lord has made me.

That is, after all, what it’s all about.

Hey Ms. Paula. Here in deep, deep South TX we make cascarones for the kids to enjoy after our Easter luncheon. I start making the cascarones or eggshells in February so my grandkids can have plenty by the time Easter rolls around. The weeks leading up to Easter we spend the evenings coloring or dying the cascarones, filling them up with confetti and sealing them. We have so much fun just talking and coming up with ideas as to what design to put on the eggshell or what color to use. The best part is when the kids start cracking the cascarones on each other's heads. They are all running around and screaming, just having such fun. It's a tradition I am passing on to my grandchildren and hopefully the will pass on to their children.

My maternal grandmother passed when I was very young. One of the few memories I have of her is an Easter when she brought my sisters and I scarves for Easter. They were the type the 'bobbie soxers' wore, way back when. When ever I see similar scarves today, I think of my 'Grammy' and that Easter. An Easter tradition in my family is pickled eggs. We pickle them in beet juice. I think that it was a way for my mom to get us to eat the left over hard cooked eggs that had been colored. I don't color eggs anymore but, I still make pickled eggs.

Dear Paula Happy Easter to you and all of your family!!! You all look Beautiful and am so happy for ya all on the weight you have lost!!! I am sure you will inspire many too do the same! My brother Tom and his wife Connie are both diabetic and heavy as well. He loves to cook and is a Huge fan of yours,so I am hoping he will do more of your lighter recipes!!!! I was wondering if you have heard from other people about your cookware? I have bought 6 sets for family and friends, and finally bought a set for myself! I was thrilled to treat myself to a Red 10 piece set. I Loved it, but after 4 months I was very disappointed that the Teflon on the 5 quart pan and one the frying pans started to peel off! I take really good care of my things so I don't know why this has happened. I called my sister and daughter -in-law as I bought them each a set of your cookware (robin egg blue) and theirs are fine, which I am thankful for! The other 4 sets for gifts don't have this problem, mine was the set I bought in solid red color so I wonder if this has happened to others as well? I LOVE your cookware sets, but for now will probably buy them for special gifts, and when I go to replace the set I have now it will be in a different color then the solid red. I bought mine at Walmart because of the sale price, but the rest for gifts at Kohls . I just wanted to let you know about mine and will still continue to be a fan of yours!!!! Take Care and a Very Blessed Easter to You and Yours! Sincerely, Laurie Woodman 1414 So.St.Rd. 39 Danville,IN.46122 (317)745-6452

I wish I lived closer to you, I'd like to buy a dozen Duck egss from you, can't find any around here & they are so good. Loved seeing Matthew's picture, he is looking more like Jack, I think. Both are adorable. I have 4 great grandchildrten, 2 live in Alaska & 2 here in Frankfort. Nothing like them. I also love your magazine & you, Jamie & Bobby's TV shows. After a Liver transplant, I became a diabetic from the medication I take and I wrote to the Food channel once asking them for a diabetic show but haven't seen one yet but I have learned to adjust the ingredients. Thanks for all you do. Anita Harrod from Frankfort, KY

My sons and granddaughter are grown, but I always colored and decorated eggs when they were growing up. When young, my mom and I did the same thing. Now that mom is older(84 years young, she resides in a nursing home. I'm going to take her a basket of eggs for Easter that I decorate just for her. She's going to love having them in her room for a few days.

A basket - filled with not only regular colored eggs, but also with plain white boiled ones, which have then been speckled with a toothbrush dipped into the various colors of dye, can be a knockout look! This year, since we won't have any of our 5 children,or the combined total of 13 grandkids ( his 6, my 4 and two steps plus 1 great grand) around, I have a crystal basket full of antique glass eggs as a centerpiece on the table - but I will still fix something special for my husband and myself. At 75, he still "needs" a solid chocolate Easter bunny, lol! Happy Easter to you and all of yours.
