I’m in Wentzville, Mo. this week celebrating an early Christmas with my family. We just wrapped Season 7 of Paula’s Best Dishes and I’m exhausted. My mother has promised me that I won’t have to do any cooking. I’m not only happy about that because I am tired, I’m happy about that because nothing tops my mother’s cooking.
My mother, Ginger, is an amazing cook. She was lucky to live on a “boutique farm” in rural Missouri and learn at the apron strings of my grandmother Lula Mae. I’m lucky to have learned from her some of those same secrets shared by her mother. My favorite is my mom’s chocolate cream pie. Warm out of the oven with a caramel colored meringue piled oh so high it is more comforting to me than any hug. She might not say it often, but I know my mom adores me when she makes me this pie.
Today, while rushing to get Christmas gifts and warm clothes packed just hours after leaving Paula’s house, my husband Josh, son Anthony and I left a tropical Savannah and flew into a frosty Midwestern afternoon. Seeing my parents waiting inside the terminal to greet us with a big smile was the best. Walking into my mom’s kitchen and seeing the chocolate cream pie cooling on the counter was…true love.
Merry Christmas,
Libbie
