10 Quick Household Tips

By Susan Greene, aka “Bubbles”

Hello again!

The older I get the easier and safer I like for things to be.  I guess that I have become aware of all of the hazardous materials in our world in which we live and I’ve grown to like things to be as simple as they can be. I figure that I breathe enough pollution and eat enough chemicals in what is supposed to be “good for you” food, that if I can expose myself to as many natural cleaning and maintenance products maybe I will live to be 100!  A BIG birthday is just around the corner and I want to celebrate many, many more.  Watch out Methuselah, here comes Bubbles!

Let me give you a few helpful hints on how to solve some household and personal problems I’ve learned over the years:

1. Teeth Whitening
Natural way to WHITEN your teeth –In a small container, put a dab of toothpaste mixed with 1 teaspoon water, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide.  Brush your teeth with this mixture once a week and watch what happens!

2. Toilette Trouble
Got a clogged toilet?  Pour a gallon of Clorox in the bowl and let it sit for several hours.  Flush and WALA, the clogged toilet is fixed without calling the plumber.

3. Garden Glamour
Want your concrete garden statues and bird baths to look old? Get some Buttermilk (out of date is even better) an old paint brush and paint away. It will not take long and the green mossy substance will appear.  You can repeat this procedure any time you feel that a spot has been missed.

4. Add Shine to Glasses
Cloudy drinking glasses in the cabinet can be sparkling in no time.  Put them in the dishwasher and pour a big splash of Clorox in the dishwasher along with the regular cleaning solution and not only will it clear up the glasses, but your dishwasher will be refreshed and sanitized.

5. Sticky Grits, No More!
Hate to clean a pot that you cooked grits in?  Fill the pot with warm water and float a fabric softener sheet in the pot.  Let this sit in the kitchen sink overnight and the STUCK grits will come right out in the morning.  This will work for broiler pans, cookie sheets, and any other type of cooking utensil that needs cleaning.

6. De-Junking Jewelry
Keep a bottle of organic soap by the bathroom sink and use a drop on your ring finger to slip off your rings.  Hey, they will be sparkling.  Windex will also do the trick also!  Keep a small dish filled with soap and soak your jewelry overnight to keep the biscuit dough and cake mix from building up if you cook with your rings on.

7. Copper Pot Clean-Up
LOVE my copper pans!  They are fabulous to cook in but were a pain to clean until I found KETCHUP!!  Buy a stash of ketchup when the grocery store has a special and keep it handy for cleaning that copper pot after you cook in it.  Carson loves to help me clean the pots.  It is amazing how easy this is to do.  Squirt the ketchup on the copper, let it sit for a few minutes, rub it in, rinse off and your pot looks new.  Repeat if necessary.

8. Wrinkle-Free
I admit that I love my BOTOX.  I met a beautiful lady that is 77 years old.  She had without a doubt the most beautiful skin that I have ever seen.  I figured a facelift or two and maintenance for sure.  Just had to ask her and this is what she said, “HONEY I USE PREPERATION- H EVERYDAY AND NIGHT.”  She said she got tired of changing from one expensive cream to another and has used the PREPARATION – H religiously for years.  Now get this, buy the suppositories not the ointment.  Your body heat will allow you to use the suppository like a tube of lipstick.  Got me a box and I promise you will see a difference!  Think about this, it makes sense.

9. Bug Off!
I live in the South and it is hot and humid.  Outside plants often get scale and white flies, especially ivy.  Get a gallon jug and fill it with tap water.  Pour ½ cup cooking oil and a generous squirt of dawn dishwashing liquid in the jug.  Shake and pour what you need in a spray bottle and treat those pesky critters on your plants.

10. Kitchen Helpers
The best way to clean the beaters of your mixer after you have had a precious GRAND to help you make a cake!  Love this helpful hint!

Hope that these helpful hints will solve some of your problems like they have for me.

Dear Paula, I don't imagine that you will ever read this but I am like you what you see is what you get and I tend to put it all out there. I find this whole situation absolutely obscene. The very idea that anyone would think poorly of you or that you had any kind of hateful bone in your body is just absurd. I am very angry at the sponsors that have dropped your lines. I am on disability and unfortunately to make ends meet I am forced to buy at there stores. If I had a bunch of money I would buy EVERY item available with your name on it. I realize that you are not personally going to become as poor as I am overnight but I am also smart enough to know that this will have far reaching repercussions on many people that make them. I was born in the North, I Thank God every day that I live in the South and have for most of my adult life and will never have to cross the Mason/Dixon line again. Unfortunately most Yankees don't understand Southern Culture and the Southern way of life and never have. More is the pity. Because as you and I know it doesn't have squat to do with race at all. But a warmer, more openly generous way of living and loving people. My Partner of 38 years is directly descended from Mary Todd Lincoln and Francis Scott Key. She too remembers her great grandmother telling stories about the civil war and the people that would come to her grandparents and lovingly acknowledge them on the street when she was a child. Paula I know you will hold your head high and will get through this. But I also know that it will not always be easy. Please remember that the average person on the street is on your side as well as God and that we will be so happy when you return to us someday. Lovingly Always, Lynne Bash

My heart goes out to Paula. She has done nothing wrong. My husband watches her show constantly. She is a wonderful beautiful caring woman who is being attacked unjustly. Any stores that have "discontinued/dropped" her products should be ashamed of themselves and really think about not only the message they are sending but the lack of backbone they truly have. Has anyone never said something they have regretted? And 30 years ago? Really? How sad people are for destroying someone for one word that no one even cares about?!?! Paula - hold your head up high! You have more support than you are probably aware of.

I am an African American. I want you to know I believe you have been treated very unfairly. I hope this nightmare will end for you. I do not understand why people are going after you like this for something said 30 years ago. This is not god's way or a humane way to treat a fellow human being.

Miss Paula; I can not express to you the anger I feel about what's happened to you over the last couple of weeks. I've always admired you and your family ad feel that you've been unfairly punished. In a small show of support I will not be buying anything from Wal-Mart or Smithfield in the future. I ask everyone who loves and supports you as I do to follow me. These reactions from these companies should not go unpunished. I love you and support you now and in the future. I hope to meet you one day. Sincerely, Jeff Dawson/Brandon,Fl.

Paula, so sorry for the hell the media has put you through this week. My ex and I have been fans of yours for years now. I believe you have enough of a following from fans that you could do well to promote your products online yourself...who needs Wal-Mart, home depot or Qvc or any of them! Your true fans stand behind you and see you through this difficult time. We love you girl! God Bless you and yours, My thoughts and prayers are with you, Hugs! Christine Wireman

paula, i have very much enjoyed watching you for years. in spite of the sugar, butter, sour cream, mayo, etc. etc., I, (and most people with an inkling of sense) know what healthy cooking means. you have brought a sense of fun, laughter and love into the kitchen which has been missing for more then a generation. i believe you are sincere with your apology. i'm sorry that you picked matt lauer to do the interview. i challenge him to question any and/or all of his guests to answer the same question to which he felt compelled to question you (including himself). i also challenge the food network, E, sports networks, and any and all media to do the same: in other words ask any and/or all of their highly priced chefs or other personalities to answer the question....have you ever used a racial slur????? If everyone was held as accountable as you have been, it would become a joke. I don't condone racial slurs but I challenge that the only individual that has never, ever used such a slur should be allowed to challenge you....and dare i say, that presents very, very, very few people. God Bless you and Michael; hang in there. there will be plenty of sponsors who will step up to the plate.

Dear Paula , I do not know how to contact you so I will do it on this website. I want to express my support for you and I am very dismayed that some businesses have dropped you . You were honest answering a question and who has not said things in the past that they now regret ? You have apologized several times--what more do they want ? Enough already ! Best regards---Ingeburg macaulay
