Diabetes in a New Light

By Paula Deen

Hey y’all,

When I learned I had type 2 diabetes, I decided to approach managing the disease with the same positivity and “go get ‘em” attitude I have everyday. In the past, I’ve heard so many stories of people like me that let diabetes control their lives, but I didn’t want to let this slow me down. I wanted to take control and have a delicious time doing it.

So today, I want to bring a new light to type 2 diabetes.  I, along with Jamie and Bobby, are sharing with Americans an exciting new campaign called “Diabetes in a New Light.” It’s going to be a tasty journey, and I hope that y’all will come along with me.

Of course, I will continue to share my favorite Southern recipes, just like my mama, grandmother and family shared with me over the years. And now, I’ll be adding a little bit of a lighter touch to some of these wonderful dishes.  Visit www.diabetesinanewlight.com to join me!

I’m wishin’ y’all love and (lighter!) dishes, from my kitchen to yours,

Paula

I just wanted to say how much I admire you and wish you the best in the future. It must be really difficult to deal with this when your whole life has been Southern cooking. People don't understand how people eat in the South. You are to be looked up to not criticised. Best luck in the future.

Don't let the negative press get you down. I love watching you cook, it doesn't matter if it is something I would eat or not. The public has to decide what is best for them to eat. I could eat my weight in your Butter Cake but I don't.lol Praying for you and your family for many blessing and great health. Love ya!

It was a nice get away through such hard times! I believe when life is dark make your own sunshine! And there you were each day cheerfully enjoying life and giving to others your success stories and encouraging me all along. You go girl! By the way your loss of weight looks great and I always thought you were beautiful on the inside out! Paula,I'm looking so forward to sharing your new recipes for being diabetic, I've been diabetic for 10 years and like you I chose to keep it to myself until I could come to terms with the disease. I love your cookbooks and your show. I have altered your recipes myself to fit my lifestyle and really am tired of hearing the ridicule you are getting from others. I think you are wonderful and I will continue to use your recipes and look forward to watching you on food network.

I just wanted to say that I love your shows and everything about you. I'm sorry to hear about your diabetes, but know that you will be a very positive voice for others that share diabetes with you. I'm very excited to learn your new recipes and see just how enjoyable they will all be. I have decided to try and cook healthier for my family and me, as both my parents have diabetes and I feel that I need to become more aware for myself. Your smitle is so bright and I love to know that you are fighting back. Thanks for all you bring to my home.

Paula, I just wanted to say that you should be praised for telling people about your diabetes in that you will be able to give recipes that are good for diabetics. I have had type 1 diabetes for 24 years. I don't tell everyone because it is just none of their business. I do however share it with those who may be experiencing such a diagnosis. I have learned what I can and can't eat based on my own body not everyone's opinion and I hope you are doing the same. I have recently gone on the insulin pump which is great because I don't eat on schedule or do anything on schedule for that matter. I have horses and goats and do anything I want. Diabetes and all! I know you can do that too and just want you to know that even though it really is no one's business what you have, I support you completely. If they think your food is too rich, don't eat it. You know we are each responsible for our own actions and shouldn't try to blame others for our inadequacies. I will continue to use your recipes and enjoy your shows! Keep on going! You are really someone that others could use as a role model, unfortunately alot of people today don't have the motivation and strength of character. You do. Thank you for being there and keep the recipes coming!

When the news first came out about your diabetes, I was going to write you and express my sorrow about the invasion of your privacy. Then I realized it came out several years after your diagnosis, after you made your deal with a drug company and after you made sure to get Bobby that embarrassing show on Cooking Channel. Then you had the nerve to appear on The Chew and defend your drug company endorsement by saying that, after all, you had to make a living. Between all your cookbooks, TV shows, numerous restaurants, booksignings, cruises, home furnishings, ad nauseum, it's insulting to everyone who supported you for years to say "we have to make a living." This has changed my view of you and your family.

Dear Paula, Bobby & Jaime, Thank you so very much for being such a bright light, and bringing such happiness to me and a world of others. I cannot imagine how difficult that must be at times. Yes we all know when people are as popular and loved as you all...there are privledges, gifts of all kinds that only you are privy too. but there is soooo very much ..im sure...that you are no longer privy also. you must share your life your time and energy with the world. practically forfeit your anonymity and just being a regular sort of invisible joe when u wanna be. God bless you. You all have certainly been chosen for a tremendous feat. Im so grateful for the light you bring to my little world. I hope you all get a deep feeling of satisfaction or joy from knowing how much you touch soooo many people. what a gift you are . And with that ....my best friend and i are comin' to your neck of the woods, unfortunately, in between your book signings! $#@#@% !!! lol. But im soooo looking fwd to it God willing!. Be well Deans!! GodSpeed. Many Many Thanks for y'all being just you. Love and best "wishes" from my world to yours. gail.
